Need a Rebuilt 22R...

Hey guys, my first post here, I have an 86 P/U that needs a new engine. I'm hoping to put in a long block rebuilt 22R in it, but am not sure where I should order from.

I'm hoping to spend ~$1,700 or possibly less..

Help?

You could get an entire 86 PU truck with a good engine for less than $1700 on CL!

I'd look for a beater on CL with a good running engine, then you have some spare parts as well, or just find a used motor for $400-$800.

there's ALLOT I can get a machine shop to do for $1,700

...and have about a thou left over...


And what say your old block is toast?

Well, block isn't toast, but there's a stuck head bolt that will be a bitch for even a shop to get out, and its had oil + coolant sludge sitting in it for.... 9 months now?

I'm in Boise, ID - if you guys have other suggestions for getting parts and the work done etc for a decent amount less than $1700, I'm all ears, but I know I need a new head (old one is warped) and would need new pistons, rings, crankshaft, bearings, all that fun stuff anyway :x

I would strip the block down to nothing, take it to a GOOD machine shop and see if they can fix the head bolt. A hot tank will easily get rid of the goop inside.

If all goes well, call engnbldr.com for the head and other parts you need, put it back together. I'm sure you can do all this for under your budget.

If the bolt is leaving a stud up off the deck you or the machine shop can get it out. Flush with the deck and yeah, hardest, but not impossible. It ain't over till the heavyset lady sings, remember that.

In a pinch, brake parts cleaner will clean it to the bare metal, but it can get pricey. And unless you take it to a machine shop you won't get a Magnaflux. Every block I've ever took to a shop has had some oil and grime on it, they've always cleaned it and never said a word to me about it.


Having a bottom end that *might* be in speck, is fully rotating, and without a bearing spun or rod thowed will save you a ton of money.

As far as rebuilding it myself goes, I guess I'm just worried I'd mess it up.

I'm pretty confident around an engine, I took mine out myself and up until then had done all the work on it and was able to dis-assemble it without much trouble, but I just stopped by an engine shop (I happened to ride my bike past it) and asked them what they'd charge for a long block 22R. He said it would run about $2,300 because they get theirs from Jasper (don't know if you have any experience with them).
He also mentioned that if I bought the parts and wanted to get it rebuilt then it should be by a pro in a clean room etc.. but it seems to me if any 'particulate' got into the engine when I was rebuilding it, (barring things like sand and rocks) the engine probably wouldn't care and just flush it out.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this new development? I would like the engine to last me at least another 300k miles...

The guy that will sell you a Jasper for $2300 is allowing himself about $500 profit, which is fair I guess. Lots of engines go together in basements, car-ports, garages and pastures. Cleaner is better, but sometimes you just have to go with what you have. If you can afford it a long-block is nice, and Jasper is fairly trust worthy as long as you aren't ordering a 2F. Here is a picture of my clean room, plenty of engines have gone together right here.

There are a few guys I know from local Colorado message boards that have had great luck with www.toyotacarpart.com That's who I planned to go through but money and the need for a 5 speed swap pushed me into buying a used engine. At this point though, I'm finally making enough money where I might be getting a rebuilt from them anyway and selling my used engine. They also carry a damn good warranty and even better if you want to pay a little extra cash.

Well I rebuilt mine with one of those master rebuild kits of ebay. It was like 2 or 3 hundred dollares and it came with everything. I did the work while at work on my spare time. I upgraded to the metal chain guides and got a bigger cam, shaved the head at a local shop who also hot tanked it and checked for any probs. When I ordered the rebuild I got it .25 bored over since had block done also. I put it in my lil red 2wd st cad short bed truck. That lil truck ran strong and fired right up everytime. I only had about 5 or 6 hundred in the whole rebuild. DIY and you save alot

Did you really mean a quarter of an inch? Or should that be .025" which is still a lot?
