Need Info Fast: What probs swapping '88 3vz into a 1993 4Runner?
Hi,
I'm trying to make a deal this morning on a motor, an '88 engine to swap into a 1993 4Runner, but I want to make sure it'll work with few surprises. I know this can be done, but is it necessary to strip the 1988 V-6 down to longblock, and then replace everything on the motor with 1993 electronics, injectors, etc.? I know there's a difference with the timing belt tensioner, and because of it I may need a different water pump, but what else? New knock sensor wire...what else? I have a mechanic friend helping me, but just trying to give him as much of a "heads-up" as possible. Thanks in advance. |

No, you swap out the connections for what you have on the truck. The biggest problem you will have, and its a small one, is the timing belt tensioner. Dont know the exact date but it was changed from a spring to a hydraulic one. Its not a big issue. Just use which ever the heads will allow.
If I could, I would try to find an older one, I'm having a hard time killing my 14mm head bolt motor. IIRC, the 88-89's had a 14mm and the latter ones 90's and up had 13mm __________________ "He's in a 46 Ford and we're in a DeLorean. He'd cut through us like we were tinfoil." E. Brown. |

as far as I know you'll only have to go as far as the lower intake. That's also where you change out your knock sensor. Don't do like I did, I was gonna cut and splice the wire b/c tearing into stuff even further at the time scared the living out of me. Take the lower intake off and do it right. I think you'll have to change a group of sensors out that are on the back of the lower intake as well, I can't remember for sure, it might have been cause I stripped a bolt of something. Quote:
2MK, the reason for two water pumps is b/c one has a bypass to the oil cooler and one does not. It's a matter of debate that the things even work so I'd say the choice is yours. Quote:
If that helps you're welcome (It's been a while since I've done it) good luck

Thanks, Hilux. That confirms some of my bleary-eyed research...appreciate it.
I'll buy it tomorrow, as his kid's judo tournament came first. |
