late model intake manifold and throttle body conversion

I resurrected an old thread the other day concerning the installation of a 90 through 95 22RE (EFI) intake manifold and throttle body onto my 85 4Runner (85 through 89 22RE EFI). Here is the old thread link:

http://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyota...529-22rie.html

Pappy replied with the following in that thread:

Someday I'll go though those old pages and clean them up. I haven't looked at them in years. It is very simple, though I guess I make a lot of assumptions on ones mechanical experience. I guess I could make it a bit more cookbook. Just off the top of my head.
  • Replace your plenum and throttle body with newer plenum and throttle body. It involves removing the hoses/lines, +\- six bolts/nuts, and the two bolts to the EGR.
  • Remove TPS from both throttle bodies and replace pawl in new throttle body with the pawl from old throttle body. Install the the old TPS on the new throttle body and adjust per FSM. (note this might not be necessary if the connector is the same, but I did so the TPS matches the year of the truck for future replacement).
  • I think you can use the new cold start injector, but if the connector is different just swap in the old one. Relieve pressure in the fuel line first (run engine with EFI fuse pulled).
  • Disconnect air flow VALVE (not meter) under throttle body. Let connector hang. You won't need it.
  • Hook up coolant lines as necessary. Best to use lines from donor assembly. Might as well replace while there.
  • I think I used the matching throttle cable too, but I don't remember if it was necessary.
Here in ABQ the throttle body, intake, and cable runs about $60 at the local U-Pull. The job should take less than an hour.

I frankly was quite impressed since that was off the top of his head! Thanks!

Anyway, I've found a 94 intake assembly, throttle body, water hoses, throttle body coupling to the plastic pipe running to the filter housing, and throttle cable. Total price, $100 shipped which I didn't think was too bad.

I thought it worth starting a new thread to see if anyone else might have done this conversion and would like to add anything. Like all of my projects, this one will have to wait until the summer when I'm back in the US. However, I will resurrect the thread at that point and include some photos, etc....assuming my list doesn't get too long in the meantime!

Cool! I read along on the other thread & I am interested in your impression on improved throttle response & possible power gain. After I read that thread I went out to the pile to see if I could could just change mine out real quick, but my plenums are all the kind that turn down at the throttle body. Get home & get it done, then tell us about it!!

I first ran across this possibility when I bought my DOA Racing 22RE and notice that Tim offers a bored out throttle body and extrude-honed plenum. It's a bit pricey though so I didn't go with that addition at the time. I then did a bit of research and saw the links to the brief write ups by Pappy (see links in the thread that I linked in the first post).

He has this mod on two vehicles, one bored out TB with extruded plenum (I think) and the other stock and the impression that I had was the most benefit was gained from the swap to the later model TB and intake and not from the much more expensive modified, later model TB and intake. The new TB is larger (I think) and has the air flow valve built in so you don't use your old AFV. Also the throttle cable is a simpler (smoother?) set-up.

I figure for $100 plus some of my time it's worth trying. Also, if I did decide to go the whole hog and have Tim at DOA bore out the throttle and/or hone the intake then I would have the later model as a core and all the rest of the swap would already be done.

I've found a few write-ups on this mod at Pirate although all are lacking (IMHO) in details to one degree or another. I suspect it's one of those mods where everything is pretty easy to figure out once you have all the parts in one place. All my parts should be together next week with the only problem being me as I'll be in the UK until late July.....oh well, at least the sun is shinning this morning!

There's a Supra AFM swap, not a TB swap. I think it's linked in the FAQ....

I have a 1990 intake on my 87 22RE. Did it last summer. Definitely better throttle response and seems to have a slight hp gain. It also got rid of the clumsy throttle linkage. Its very easy and straight forward to do.
