Just bought an 82
I have been looking for a nice 2wd for awhile now and finally stumbled across this. It is an 82 with a 22r and a 5 speed. It also has power steering. Almost completely rust free and dent free. The issue is that the dude ran it of oil so I need an engine.
I haven't torn into it to find out how extensive the damage is, but I assume it has a spun bearing because it didn't throw a rod. If I changed the crank and rods with a stock crank, would I need to have the block align bored? What about if I did a stroker crank and rods from lc engineering? Would the stock transmission hold up to the extra power from the stroker? Even with the bad engine I feel like I got a pretty good deal since I only paid 300 bones and it has new upholstery. __________________ 1978 FJ40 283 v8-sold :( 1986 4runner SAS and stuff |

Pics will come soon. I keep finding 85+ engines. What would I need to do to make it work? They are the same bellhousing I believe, but what about getting the carb to work on the newer head?

you would either have to rebuild your old head and use that combined with your first gen manifolds, or convert the thing to fuel injection (nudge nudge) my buddy mike fox on the boards use to have a really good writeup on the first gen FI swap ill hunt around for it and post a link if i can find it, or better yet hopefully he will just read this post and put the link up himself

If what you are finding is an 85+ carbureted 22R, then if should work for you. Try to get the complete engine, carb to exhaust manifold.

Well would a 85+ bolt in? I was looking for pre 85 just because that is what I have. I have the engine about ready to pull out and I can tell they not only ran it out of oil, but overheated it as well. I have been looking for a good used engine because I don't want to deal with all of the issues that this one will have. I would rather get a good core and rebuild it because I wouldn't need to replace the head, crank, and a couple of rods.

IIRC, it should bolt right into your `82. As I said earlier, just get a carbureted 22R and you should be fine.

2MK, it should do fine. IIR the "stroker" doesn't ad POWA! It just moves the torque curve down in the rpms. Quote:
There are some dual intake heads, but wait, thats conflicting blocks I swear I'm gonna need to start a thread, I don't exactly know why if the heads are the same height why there is no chain for the DE-decked 22R/E?Quote:
I'm only saying this b/c I just found it out, and had Ia known I would have saved ALLOT of money at the machine shop. Get a machinist straight edge, and some feeler gauges. You can x pattern and run it longways and use the feeler gages to look for warpage. I'm so stoked to find that out, I wish I knew it earlier... And as far as EFI goes.......... It's not that carbs are so bad, it's that Toyota's EFI was so good.... That and I've seen the engines last longer. If you can get a 20R or pre dual intake head EFI, it'll be news to me... I'm flirting w/ the idea of a throttle body(?) on a Offy/ Holly intake (I want 20R EFI sooo bad )
