Spare holder

OK I drive an FJ40 but my Daughter's 89 Runner needs a new spare tire holder. The old lifter thing fell apart. I was thinking of welding a big bolt were the lifter goes and using a huge wing nut and washer or coming off the roll bar and mounting it inside. Any ideas? The Runner is stock but pretty beat up.

How did it fall apart? They are very serviceable units as long as you didn't loose any of the important parts...

There's one or two complete OEM, undercarriage spare tire holders (chain, hoist, etc.) on ebay right now. They usually go pretty cheap.

A friend mounted a cable pulley down where the lifter goes. He then ran the cable to a winch he buried into the fender area. It has a set of holes on the winch drum and base so it can be locked with a pin or padlock.

on my 80 it unbolted with the bolts going in from above it. i had the bed off, so it was a cinch.

if your truck is the same it will probably be best to use a gear wrench to remove the bolts.

If the housing part is ok, it's a piece of cake to change out the guts. Just a C clip holds it all in... What exactly is wrong with it?

I won't be able to get under it now until next week, daughter is out of town. Looked like a plate came off the housing and a horseshoe shaped spring fell out. The plate looked badly bent but the whole thing was so rusty I probably will see about getting one off E-gay or at the pick&pull.
