What is the short bed rating for 88 toyo pick up?
My friend just gave me the back end of his 88 toyota short bed truck. It has a 22re in it. I would like to know if its a 1/4 ton, 1/2 ton? I'm planning to make a chunti (mexican hillbilly
) trailer. Was also planning to keep the gas tank and use it for extra fuel.Sooooo... can some one tell me the ratings on the toyo trucks? __________________ HELO?....is this thing on? 1991 fj80 's but I drive it, suspension air bags, roof rack, trailer 8pin connection, 7 pin mod, hood spacers & stolen radio. 1985 fj60 (DD)HID-xenon retrofit projectors, tailgate storage, rear seat shoulder belts, 62 rear sway bar, & roof rack. 1987 4runner, seat bracket spacers(4crawler.com), driver side battery, HID-xenon retrofit projectors, & modified/upgraded intake, rancho shocks.WWW.RONSERRANO.COM |

spring fab time
IIRC they are 1/2 ton. But don't let that fool you, a trucks weight rating is largely based on its own weight. IIRC its GVW - GCVW I believe, what ever's left over will be the 1/4ton (500lbs) 1/2ton (1,000lbs) 3/4 (1,500lbs) you see....I think ![]() I'd pay a visit to pull-a-part and yank some sprigs According to how you double'em up you can rate it what ever you want.__________________ I'm too old school, I still hold a phone to my ear... Howdy! I am doing the same thing with an 87 freeby. You can add/subtact spring leaves to get the desired load capacity and flex, but the real limiting factor is the tires and the axle bearings. Put some "D" rated tires on it if your going to carry much weight very often. I am using my old BFG Krawler tires so I will have spares handy. They are only "C" rated, but I beat the snot out of them at 12 psi on the trail, and that's under a 6000 pound rig. I guess "where" your going to take it makes a difference too. You might want to cross post this in the "trailer Tech" section. John

10-4..... I was going to but thought that well, its a question about a toyo truck bed payload. I will ask though...
So let me get this straight.... If I go with a 1 ton axel, enough leafs, that would be enough? __________________ HELO?....is this thing on? 1991 fj80 's but I drive it, suspension air bags, roof rack, trailer 8pin connection, 7 pin mod, hood spacers & stolen radio. 1985 fj60 (DD)HID-xenon retrofit projectors, tailgate storage, rear seat shoulder belts, 62 rear sway bar, & roof rack. 1987 4runner, seat bracket spacers(4crawler.com), driver side battery, HID-xenon retrofit projectors, & modified/upgraded intake, rancho shocks.WWW.RONSERRANO.COM |

Its not that its a "1ton axle", its the fact it wont break w/ 2,000 lbs on its back. The stock axle is fine, and I'd like to think it would live w/ 3,000lbs on its back. I've never heard of one breaking. Keeping in mind it was a DEAD axle. Live would be different. There once was a little 79ish A.T, NON dually, 2WD that Toyota claimed was a 1ton. ![]() 2WD or 4WD? __________________ I'm too old school, I still hold a phone to my ear... Really the limit to what these things will carry was the engine...., and the risk of tipping over backwards.... My dad and I had so much busted up concrete in his 84 longbed that the steering was really touchy.... Way over any recommended load capacity, I think it was in the 3000 lb range.... Turn it into a trailer, but you don't need to "upgrade" anything unless you're plans are to haul many thousands of pounds regularly....

2WD short bed. I see... It will hold up nicely and have longer life due to it just being there rolling and not pushing with torque and all. soooooo? there is no problem using the stock axel without the drive shaft?....

No problem, it'll be just like it's coasting.... The axle will think it's taking a break! Hehehehe Keep it full of oil though... Don't want any problems in there....

cool! I just saved some Mulah! now, If I could some how get the hand break cable attached to some kind of electrical mechanism to work like electric brakes.... oh wait this should now be in trailer tech? unless..... some of the 4runners here have electric breaking system that I could use? keep the thread here?

I'm just BSing..... but really, how can I make it break? oh wait, you see, that would make it trailer tech.... but that will be last and at a latter time..... I think That I will keep it at 2000 lbs tops.... and no more than 3000 lbs. total.... on the final product.

The best way to make the brakes work would be one of those electrically operated master cylinders, you know, the ones they use on trailers...
Probably pricey, but that's the best way I think. Anything else would just be cobbled together...__________________ Jerod The 79-95 Truck/4Runner FAQ 89 4Runner "The James Caird" 01 4Runner, for my Pacific Mountain Cruisers |

1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton are just ways to name models on the truck that somewhat correspond to carrying capacity. The gross vehicle weight rating minus the weight of the truck, passengers and fluids will be your carrying capacity. Since you won't have a cab or motor, you probably will be good to go as long as your tires are 8 ply as previously mentioned. But since it's now a trailer, you have to balance your load since you only have one axle to carry the weight.
Your tow vehicle needs to be able to pull the load and more importantly stop the load! |

10-4... The latter parts are not a problem... will be adding propane on the front of it to help with balancing...

If you really want to stop this thing, I'd swap to discs.... The drums are ok, but they don't have the stopping power.... Also, you'll still need the electric master cylinder...

What if he uses the old "surge breaks" piston and runs it to the wheel cylinders?
