Ain't got no pics, but if it might help some young whipper snapper, GET LOCKERS or TrueTracs.
Often the first thing is a lift and tire, and it starts to spiral from there. Save your money and save your wear. All you need is tires and traction to start, then you'll know if you want to move up. Just try'n to keep'em from tear'en up. __________________ I'm too old school, I still hold a phone to my ear... Im definately in the need of new tires, and lockers, but I found out its all about the line, my 31'sll carry me up anything with the right line.
Ahead of time, sorry for the lack of picks, my camera/spotter was too busy trying to prevent body damage... So the story goes; Uncle came up from Morrilton Arkansas to wheel his FJ40 cruiser (He heads the Razorback Landcruisers) and we happen to know an awesome creek bed, so after hours of wheeling we had turned around and were headed back, and all of you know that some obstacles are more difficult to traverse going the other way! So here we go, For the lack of pictures i will try to narrate as proffesionally as possible (Que Narrator Voice) The first picture shows the way up, it took some throttle, and some "bumping" to make it up with bald tires and open diffs. ![]() So after that line didnt work, I backed down and tried again. ![]() ![]() Slowly I Made my way up it! ![]() ![]() And at this point i was trying to manuever a ungodly 5 point turn claiming my driver park light housing and my passenger tail light.^^ The tree my uncle is leaning on is the one that claimed my park light and if you look closely at the driver side bumper you'll notice that it is a little bent in. >> ![]() ![]() All in all it was an extremely fun day, with lots of angles and s****es and I learnd more about my truck in those few hours than i have in the last few months. more at myspace.com/lifelessfab __________________ Im the lil landon (ironic name...) hogansoffroad.com ^^^^^^^^^^Our Stomping ground^^^^^^^^^^ |

I wheeled with a stock mini in moab a couple of years ago that did almost every trail we went on. Of course by the end of the week the body was pretty trashed

Two things I think about:
1- Trails have gotten POTENTIALLY harder if so inclined 2- People tend to THINK they need something because well, damn it, it is fun to do. Makes you think you are working on that old BMX bike or something. Point being, folks buy stuff they will NEVER need. With that said, when I was in high school my friend had a 1986 mini, std cab, 2.4 4x4. We put in 33's with 0 lift and 0 lockers. We were up in Big South Fork so many times I cannot remember. And back then, the park had not yet become Federally sponsored/funded so there were 1- not many regulations and 2- lots and lots of horse trails/logging trails that would take you WAY back. We NEVER had a locker, NEVER even had a come along/winch and went through stuff that I cannot believe we got out of. It is all about the line and knowing your truck. I experienced a similar thing in my old 40. I never ran a lift-just healthy springs and 32x9.50 TSL's. NEVER got stuck and besides bolder dancing, I went up whatever anyone else did. Man, I WISH I had pics of those days. There were trails that put our truck at such an angle that sitting in the passenger side one could touch the ground of the road as we went by a particular section. Crazy stuff but we just never thought about it. Paranoia brings on all kinds of "think I needs" __________________ "May you be in heaven a half an hour before the devil knows you're dead" 1992 4x4 PU |

Yes. Stock toyotas (especially with solid front axle) wheel great. A good set of tires and maybe a rear locker will go a long way. throw in some tcase gears and you will easily be able to keep up with big dogs. did it for years with 32s, limited slip and 4.7 marlin gears. did awesome

I got my son a bone stock '83 mini a few months ago. We put 32x11.50 generic semi-bald mud radials from my FJ 40 that's in the shop, and it's amazing what it will go through. He was the only one to get through a huge mud hole except for an old scout with 38" swampers and locked x2. We just put a 3" suspension lift on it this weekend with 13.50x33 mud grapplers coming soon for graduation. And before you think I spoil him, it's also a reward for getting an appointment to the USMA at West Point!

Here was my 4runner when it was pretty much stock:
it had a little 1.5" lift, 4.7 marlin crawler case gears, a limited slip and 32s ![]() ![]() This is my friend Clint's truck, his is all stock aside from some 31 mud terrains ![]() ![]() ![]() His truck still looks the same, mine is significantly different though... ![]() ![]() __________________ 1985 4Runner SR5 with the usual goodies. |
