is this gonna work?

i have recently purchased an '81 22R from a guy, to put into my '87 4Runner. the engine has approx. 140k, and no real issues. of course, the 22R is carbed, and the now not working 22RE is going to be replacing it. i understand a new timing chain wouldn't be compatible, along with a lot of other parts. are there going to be any problems that can be identified beforehand?

Unless the EFI's intake will bolt up to it, and I don't think it will.

Don't take my word though, the more you fool around like this, the more you will learn and find out about Toyota's.

And, you wont be able to swap the heads. The 81's block has high top pistons and the RE's head wont let them into the combustion chamber, sorry.

However.... if you ABSOLUTELY needed to get it going, the cranks and rods will interchange.

I'm relatively sure you can bolt the EFI intake to the earlier head, but I think there is a stud or 2 that has to be drilled and tapped into the head. But if you want to EFI the carbed engine, you're also gonna have to drill and tap the block down by the oil filter for the knock sensor.

If you only want to swap the entire 22R into the '87, carb and all, then there will be some wiring issues. The plugs are very different, and you will need the small emissions computer that sits under the pass side kickpanel. It monitors some of the emissions inputs, and I think it also decides when to run the carb heater.
