a couple of questions regarding a LN135 4runner
hey guys,
i have a 95 4runner with 2.8l 3L engine which has done only 113000km... there is a lot of injecter noise and it give really bad gas mileage close to 9 kmpl . a buddy of mine has a ' landcrusier 2' with the same engine and he gets 12 kmpl running a 4 speed gearbox ! i am planning to take my pump/ injecter nozzles out to send them to the shop so they can re calibrate them. could any of you please tell me whats the ideal fueling setting so i can ask the shop guys to do exactly that. we have very few 3L engines here so i'd like to be sure with what is being done. lastly i have coil spring suspension in front and leaf spring at the rear... my rear leaf springs have sagged and a friend told me i should look for parabolic leaf springs or composite leaf springs. could you tell me where i could look for these... the car is a city daily driver and it does no where close to the kind of offroading i have seen on the forum. .any help is apreiciated... thanks\ phil |

With my 2L bored out to or beyond 2.5 Litres, my record is 20 miles per US gallon, which equates to 11.7L/100km Your buddy is either fudging the figures, or is lying. None of your questions can be answered, whilst you haven't listed your location.

As we don't have that engine in the US (to my knowledge anyway), someone outside the US will have to help you.

My guess to the Injector noise, is maybe the Engine is starving for Fuel. Just a Fuel Filter change should fix it.I only got my Injectors and Injector Pump reconditioned, so I could get a warrenty on my rebuilt Engine after it went for a swim with 300,000km and 21 years under it's belt. It cost me well over 2 lahk The problem with getting Diesel Engine work done is that most workshops pretend to be experts at Diesels, but you won't know 'til you've handed over atleast AU$1,000 Quote:

The problem with the 3L in a Surf/4-runner is that the vehicle is too heavy for the engine to do anything other than accelerate. By this I mean that the engine just doesn't have the oomph to get the thing up to speed quickly, at which point it would normally basically idle to maintain the speed.
Being in India, I am sure you are accelerating and decelerating a lot, so you are magnifying the inefficiency of the 3L in that vehicle. I'd bet on the open road that your mileage would be quite a bit better. The best solution would either be to put in high gears (you should have the 4.56 now, but maybe 4.88 would be better?), or add a turbo to the 3L. The turbo from a 2LII-T or 2LT-E should bolt right up to the 3L. FWIW--a 3L with a turbo would be wicked sweet.... (yep, there's already a thread here about it--check the FAQ) Any pictures of the rig(s)? Your 4-runner and your friend's "Land Cruiser 2." We love foreign rigs (I own two!) here. ![]() Dan __________________ 1976 HJ-45 (needs restoration) http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj45-owners-...self-into.html 1991 "Faux-Lux"Pickup 4x4 2LT-E/R-150f http://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyota...onversion.html "Dandelions. Welcome back to Mud DinkyRacer!
I don't know much about diesels, but I do know that it's awesome talking to folks from the other side of the globe here on Mud. Glad to have you!

thanks guys for all the info and warm welcome
.yea fuel here is at times very crapy and adultrated .... so i guess will get them checked anyway. yes i did read the 3L with 2Lt turbo thread but when the owner of the car wasnt very clear when i came to fueling ( what to set it at) . there is a 2LT turbo complete with manifold everything. i'll try pm ing the guy to find out more about the fueling. but wont the gas mileage go down with a turbo ? even if driven the same way as the normally aspirated 3L ? will post pictures of my 4runner very soon thanks guys... phil |

The mileage very well may increase. A 2LT powered 4x4 gets better mileage than a 2L powered 4x4 for just this reason: the turbo gives the engine the oomph needed to accelerate the vehicle to speed, and then the engine can loaf along maintaining that speed. The normally aspirated engine on the other hand spends all of it's time trying to accelerate the vehicle (and thus consuming more fuel, for longer periods of time). Especially in town, this effect is more pronounced.
That is the theory anyway.... Besides, turbo is to diesel what key is to lock. The diesel powerplants really, really do well with a small turbo (I'm not a fan of huge amounts of boost just for gobs of power, what I've got is fine, thank you). Nice looking truck!
