Anyone done a Head Gasket replacement on a SR5 ?

I found one with a LITTLE bit of damage for $400 that needs a head. Thinking about picking it up.

That for only 400 bucks. What else is wrong with it? That looks like a real good deal if all it needs is a head gasket. Drop in a brand new engine for a couple thousand and still come out way ahead.

Yea, this side looks good. Other sides been hit in the lower rocker... though the door does still shut.

I think it has a 22re engine in it. I'm wondering if they are hard to replace.

Hi Hillux, how big a job is this? I have all the tools... just want to know what amount of time I'd be into.

Hard to give a good specific answer with out knowing your previous experience and skill.

outa ?

To be honest with you in case like yours I would pull the entire motor.
I'm sure others will disagree with my method but its what I do having done so many. And its pretty easy to me.

Some benefits include,

1: You get all the room in the world you need to work on it.
2: Dont have to drop the front diff
3: Dont have to mess with the oil pan from underneath
4: do the clutch
5: rear main.....and if you find something that warrants a pull,
6: your gonna wind up having to do it anyway.
7: the hot air tube from the exhaust manifold, unless you want to pull the mani with the head.
8: (quazi, because you can lift off the lower intake with the head and do) the Allen bolt in the intake that is a bitch to do from in the compartment

and depending on how far you want to go, you can have it magnafluxed, freeze plugged and REring it. that and whats listed above, Id say less than $800-$1,000

around the world answer but I don't feel I can come close in my estimate to tell you what to expect cuz I do it different.

I can pull a motor in +/- 2 hours.

I feel bad now I need to tone down my responses.

Read up on all this,
Hidden Bolts on 22R/RE
Dropping the IFS stuff to get to the engine bearings

And these found in the FAQ

22R/RE timing chain replacement

Another timing chain replacement

And another timing chain write up

I like how it's blowing steam in the pic..... That's great!

Seems like a good deal to me. 22RE is pretty easy to work on. If you just want to change the headgasket, it's a 1-2 day project depending on any trouble you run into...

If you do it in-frame, put a rag over the safety catch,,,,it'll gut you like a pig or rip yer shirt if ya don't.

And IH8 cleaning of the old gasket, my beer belly hanging over the fenders and all ...get yourself an old discarded tire (also good for floor and transit engine support) and a ply board square, I use an old press board 2'x2', and make yourself a cheap platform.

Get a paint pen set at office depot and make sure you mark everything you take apart.
For same color stuff I multi dot, because you will run out of colors and still have stuff to mark.
