13 Inch Bed Bob

So yesterday I bobbed the bed, a whole 13 inches.....
8 hours of hard strenous work- Thanks to my two brothers, I couldn't have done it w/out your help-

A small write up- tools needed

Sawsall- a corded or 28 volt unit

Welder- A mig welder

Plasma Cutter- For cutting frame

Grinder- For grindng welds and finishing body work

8mm, 10mm, 12m, 14mm, 17mm wrenches, ratchet and sockets

Block Sander

Bondo Filler

Four to five metal cutting blades for sawsall

Assorted sanding grits and grinding disk- from coarse to fine

That is a list of all the big things- but you get the point-

On with the pics:

Cutting Off Tailgate/Light Setion

The Second Cut

Bed Cut Off Prep For Frame Cut

Taching On The Tailgate Section

Cleaning Up the Welds W/grinder

W/Bondo Filler

Nice work! That's gonna turn out sweet. What was your primary reason for choosing to bob it?

I was getting hung up on the back of the bed coming off of rocks/obstacles- I didn't have a rear bumper, soooo I said why not hack the back of the truck off....... For it being the first time doing this type of work I'm happy w/the turnout. Still have to massage the body a little but I'm going to lay down some rubberized undercoating on the sides of the bed.

CLEAN JOB!! Me likey!!

I knocked mine out in a few hours. This is the third vehicle I've done to date, first my white 85' reg cab for 11 inches in '97, then my red 85 'runner for 12" (don't do this everyone with a runner if you plan on keeping the tailgate and what-not.. max 9.5" or you're notching the fold-down tailgate HEAVILY)in 2000.. now my black 85 reg cab a month ago. I used the sawzall for the frame too. It cut straight and I didn't feel like tugging the plasma from the shop next door :-) I went only 8" on this one but it was a short bed and have yet to come close to dragging in on 33's.

I was a bit worried, but my little buddy Todd was there to grab the front of the truck.
my wife is 5' 8" she is spotting me here. that is Todd to the left.
and no that is not camera angle.

I drove it to the car wash, as I need to take the thing apart for new gears, locker, longs ect. I swear this guy in a chevy, flipped me off (once he saw it was a guy driving) then swerved like he was going to hit me.

lol.. I swerved back and umm he gave it up... but I did keep an eye over my shoulder while washing it down.

I like to wash off as much shait as possible before takeing something apart.
just bought a power washer so will not have to go to the car wash anymore.

WOW! I like where is that rock ledge? That pink is cool too, but I don't think I will be painting my rig those colors any time soon.
