turbo toyota truck???
On the way back from work today I saw and 80's truck at a light with some 80's faded lettering on the door that said turbo. It also had toyota truck turbo emblem on the truck. I didn't know that the old trucks ever had a turbo as an option or was this maybe the ultra rare diesel pu??? Just wondering

Not rare at all, although they are now, especially with the uber-desired R151F 5-speed tranny. I parted one out a little over a year ago just to get the tranny.

Only 86-87 to compete with the V6 mini's that were coming out while they were in the process of designing the 3.0.....
There's some more info in the "history" links in the FAQ. My uncle has an 86 Turbo, I haven't seen it yet though...

I used to drive an 87 Turbo pickup with a TJM bar and an aluminum flatbed for a work truck
What a fun truck, that thing would definitely throw down in higher RPMs. You don't have to use the CT-26 turbo when it dies either

The most common engine is the 2LT-II, from 93 they came with the 1KZT which I would prefer of the two. And not the one Ive got..

close but here's the real scoop.
The years are 85-87 in the North American market for 22RTE equipped mini trucks and 4Runners. R151's were only available in truck versions as all turbo 4Runners were autos. The turbo is a CT20, not a CT26. Although, I havent done it personally, a CT26 off a 7MGTE looks like it could be easily adapted to the stock manifold. The CT26 is a much better turbo due to improved oiling and less heat build up. The CT20 has issues with cracking due to excessive heat build up. The 22RTE block is identical to a 22RE with the exception of the added oiling passage for the turbo. The 22RTE pistons are lower compression. Same with the head. EFI is different along with the fuel pump and injectors.

Actually, a VERY small number of 85's had the turbo. I think there were more 4Runners with it than PUs in 85...Either way, they were both VERY low numbers in 85. Also, the turbo was offered up to 88 1/2....There were more 88s with the turbos than the 85s. The 3.0 didnt get put into the 88s until Jan of 88.
I remember reading in one of the forums that there MAY have been a difference in rods and main bearings between the NA & Turbo 22RE's....??? __________________ Art 80 Hilux 22R Hybrid w/dual Mikunis, R151 trans, Budbuilt crossmember, 33" Buckshots 74 FJ40 "The Project" 86 Cressida 99 Tacoma And for parts: LOL 75 & 79 FJ40 84 4Runner 85 Cressida 86 PU Two 88 PU's TLCA #8472 |

There was also a turbo diesel in 83-85...
But regarding the '85 22rte, I have never seen one with a solid axle. Every "85" I have seen was a very early '86 with a '85 build date. __________________ ----Bottoms Up 4wd Club-----

I had a black 87 reg cab turbo 5spd when i was 19. It was an immaculate 1 owner truck when I bought it. I was young and stupid, and beat the crap out of it for a year before trading it in on my first mustang. It's one of the trucks I wish I had been smart enough to not destroy and hold onto.

Just traded my 60 for an '87 turbo 4runner with 124K miles in great shape. Nice little rig and the turbo is a noticeable increase over a regular 22RE. Coolest part is the digital (Ala Night Rider) dash.

I would not be surprised if an RE head would yield better power, mpg and would still live with low test when you have 7.5:1 comp ratio w/ 82/83 cc heads and go to a 52/54 cc I dont think it would be that drastic, I dont have the data but I'd say very close to 8.0 c/r maybe less. OR, a 7mgt turbo What say Mud? __________________ Originally Posted by Hilux I want to be the Ben Braddock of the apocalypse ![]() And Resident headache getter ridder of-er for the ladiezzz... ![]() |

No, I have a Jan 85 and its IFS, my reasoning behind this is that like power windows/ locks/ TURBO.....the IFS cush ride was included in the upgrade. OFFICIALLY ALL trucks/ SUV's regardless of options went to IFS in 86 these trucks/ SUV's are more common and why I believe its the rule used today. Its doesn't roll of the tongue when you have to say except and then name a rare truck every time youre discussing models __________________ Originally Posted by Hilux I want to be the Ben Braddock of the apocalypse ![]() And Resident headache getter ridder of-er for the ladiezzz... ![]() Last edited by Hilux; 04-14-08 at 08:31 AM. |

Yup like you guys have said its harder to find now but i lucked out and picked up my 86' turbo 4runner for 600 dollars with only 130k miles on it. believe it or not that was all i paiud, and its running no problems or anything. ive done a LITTLE research on it and yeah other than a few modifications its pretty much the same as the regular 22re's. i think the most exciting part is that its just alot more responsive to all those little tuneups you can give it. by simply putting a better turbo on it (ive found a few pre fabbed kits specifically for it). some bigger fuel injectors, maybe a nice exhuast setup and whatnot and there is a huge gain in horsepower. one site i read that listed the mods( which werent very many nor TOO expensive) and it was dyno tested at around 350? horsepower... i was amazed. its something of what i hope to do. ill look around some more and see what i can find out. i work at a toyota dealership so i have insider help as well, cant always trust those internets! haha.

I grabbed my 87 turbo for 1k... blew HG 600 miles later ... Got the turbo bug and started building. 210 reliable HP later and next weekend moving the drivetrain to my 85 wheeler. I have an electronic boost control i picked up on ebay that keeps it at 8psi normally (around 160 HP/26mpg) then flip the switch to out run or tug up a hill with a trailer with 11psi. I have the injectors replaced with Supra injectors and a Megasquirt computer that can take the boost to 14/15 and 200hp+... just don't like stopping at the pump with these gas prices. The garrett T3 upgrade was a little more expensive than the CT-26 (the 26 on requires a little enlarging on bolt holes for the manifold match and larger exhaust) but it allows for more tuning and that louder whistle we all like to hear!!
The manifolds on ebay you may have been talking about are from Leen Steed?? Steed Speed - Home. He has a couple of older versions left which is what I purchased for $400 shipped. Since I wasn't going for complete race machine I didn't see the differences in the newer model being worth 350$ more. The LC engineering CC'd manifolds are made by Leen if I can remember correctly. __________________ 85 turbo mini locked and loaded with a tightened arse! SOLD95 FJZ80 Lockers OME

Back in the day, I looked at a pristine '86 turbo for $5000. I thought it was over-priced. I wish it were around for that price today.

We would run the T100 V6 "R" trans in our "stock mini" desert truck - SR5. Just switch the input shaft and bell housing with the turbo parts.
