Roof Rack on the Bed ......how ?

1985 Toyota Long Bed.

I want to mount a Safari style (conferr - wilderness - etc.) on the bed rails of the bed.

Has anyone done this yet ? or with a Roof Top Tent ?

If so - what type of clamps did you use to grab the bed rail ? Yakima ? Thule ?

Looking for ideas ................

So essentially you want to mount it straight to the bed rails, or you want to make it roof height?

If I was mounting a rtt on the rails I would keep it simple and use u bolts to clamp yakima cross bars directly to the rail that the rtt would clamp to. Or get real tricky and build a hard tonneau cover (that the rtt mounts on) that hinges for access so you can keep your gear dry and dust free. I still miss my wildernest even though it was too top heavy, leaked and was too small for a family of 5.

So what exactly do you miss about it??

I've considered building a platform for inside the bed that I could tie down in the corners for similar reasons. You could actually design something similar to a snowmobile deck and use turnbuckle ties on the corners. Just some ideas for you.
