Help!

Im confused!

Me and my bro where hunting coyotes, being dumb teenagers we decided to hit a mud hole, or two, maybe three? I dont remember... But i got stuck... So we try turning side to side with the front wheels... Boy were we lucky, outta that hole and into a bigger deeper one... Go figure! After an hour and 1/4 tank of gas we were out and in business again... But now my clutch doesnt work. It worked fine on our way home, and then i changed my oil. (on time, only 40 miles over!) and drove to my girlfriends house... On the way there it seemed as if my clutch worked only towards the very end of the stroke... It quit working as i pulled into her drive way! I was lucky! But to get out of her drive way i had to put into 4lo and reverse and start it in gear, shut it off and put it in 1st, drove to the closet hill, shut it off, put it in 2hi, started her in 2nd on my way down the hill. I drove all the way home in second!

now i dont know what to do. If the little doohickey that has a bluish tint on my firewall is the clutch fluid resivoir, its full, if not, where is it at???! The lid didnt seem to seal it very well, so i tapped it on there, like wrapped tons of ducktape around it!

Any input is nice!

Have someone look under the truck while you push the clutch in, to make sure the clutch fork (pass side of transmission is moving...) If not, then you're clutch master cylinder may be toast.... IF it is, then you probably burned the clutch up.... If it's the master, you can get a rebuld kit for less than $20 I think... and as long as the bore isn't screwed up, it's easy to fix... If it's the clutch, maybe someone has a used clutch disc around that's in decent shape... and can help you out.... The flywheel and pressure plate could be sanded a little to help them out.... That's the cheap way to fix it FYI..... Sorry to hear about the trouble. Stay out of mud, no good can come of it....

Edit: also try pumping the clutch 5-6 times, if you can shift then, it's more than likely the master cylinder.

Whats the best way to "MUD" proof a vehicle? Ive extened all my breathers and thats about it...

but i like to pull into the school parking lot dirty, it makes me feel cool... lol

People around here dont like rocks, they like mud or sand... me i have no preference, im just sad this had to happen so soon...

1/4 tank of gas trying to get out of a mud hole, I can almost guarantee that he fried his clutch!

i have my limits, i didnt let the tac go above 3500, a didnt grind it into 1st or reverse, and i didnt let didnt let the water get above my hubs in the creek to get out, and the mud wasnt really deep, it was just a big bank to get out of...maybe touched the rim on my side and the hub on the passenger side...

if i fried my clutch... i know where a vortec and th400 are... hehe

do what 2ndGenToy said, but when someone is pumping the pedal, also check out the condition of the slave cylinder. When you do press the pedal, does it still feel the same as far as pressure goes etc... or does it feel more like there's air in the line?

i definitely think there is air in the lines, the cap on the little resivour is loose, so i taped it tight, still no luck...

OK, now I am confused! There is no mud on the bottom of the truck at all, i wasnt at all hard on the clutch, its a mystery. Im new to this whole hydraulic clutch idea...

I fixed it! 33 dollars at oriellys... Slave and Master cylinders. The slave cylinder got a bit thrashed from a log (only thing ive been on has been camp roads and mud...) and locked to were it would only move 1/4 inch or so.... Master cylinder wouldnt keep its seal... so i replaced them both! The log that i guess mashed the slave cylinder also got the boot that covers the little lever thingy. Where can i get a boot to replacethat one, or is there something else i can do??

Glad to hear that! For the boot. I'd try a junk yard... other than that it's probably a toyota only part.... Mine never seem to fit well though....

Good to hear, as long as the reservoir cap is on there somewhat snug enough to hold it on and prevent fluid from sloshing out, it should be ok. Air can't usually get into the system through the top as it would have to make it all the way through the fluid in the reservoir. If you were pushing the pedal, and the slave piston wasn't able to move, then the fluid will try to find it's path of least resistance. Can't remember what law of physics it is, but the pressure is equal everywhere within the column of fluid. So as that pressure grew, the oil would be trying to find a way out either around the seals in the slave or the seals in the MC. In your case, it appears both may have been the case.

Definitely try a junkyard for the boot if you're trying to go el cheapo, or the dealer if you aren't trying to do it for pennies (I can't imagine they'd be THAT much)

What model transmission do you have? I'm not sure if I've got an extra one sitting around the shop or not.....

mine fit real well, it was pretty difficult to get out atleast. Oriellys used to be able to get them, but anymore they dont rreally have much of anything...

The problem with junkyards is, well there are virtually none in a 50mile radius, same for a dealer.

Its the 5speed behind a 2.4 4cyl in an 84'
