22R engine problems UPDATE!

This is on my 85 Toy with the 2.4 and carb.

I did the HG in December, because it was using coolant and the exhaust looked like a steam kettle. Now from then til now Ive had no problems with heat/losing coolant of anything.

As of 2 weeks ago everytime Id drive the thing the temp gauge would almost be in the red...then drop to about the qtr mark. Then last week itd do this about 3-4 times when Im driving. Then finally on sunday I got home from about a 7 minute trip, and its sounds like hell under my hood. Boiling and blowing noises and then I came out monday morning and saw lots of coolant in the snow.

So...what do you guys think? cracked head/block? bad freeze plug?

messed up thermostat? I really have no idea and I wont have a chance to tear into it til like...sunday...

any help!!??

thanks!!!!!!

Howdy! Bad thermostat or elastic hoses. Check your oil to see if it looks like chicken gravy. You might have a cracked head/block to go along with the bad head gasket. John

Where is the coolant coming from? If there's tons of coolant hitting the ground, it's gotta be coming from somewhere. Once you've had a chance to have a close look, it will help give you an idea of what to start with.

Change out the thermostat first. Check to see if you have coolant in the oil. When you replaced the HG did you have the head checked or resurfaced? You should have.

throw away the stant thermostat.
go to toyota and get one. compare the two.
the toyota will have a two stage. open it by hand before you put it in or they can stick shut when new. you will feel it break loose it is just from sitting in the box.

get a new radiator cap at the same time.

make sure that your coolent over flow tube is not clogged.

I have yet to have a chance to see where the coolant is coming from. I didnt see anything from between head/block and no hoses or rad. look to be leaking I think it all blew out the overflow

it DOESNT look like there is any in the oil.

I put a Beck/Arnley 160* thremostat in there about a yr ago and a new cap.

I DIDNT have the head checked or resurfaced when I did the HG I usually do but I was a tight schedule.

Could I pull the stat out and run for awhile to see if that was the issue?

Should I pull the head off and check my new gasket? ...or wait

why would have my truck run fine for a little more then 2 months, thats my main thought

thanks!

Howdy! Still sounds like a sticky t-stat or a bad fan clutch. Pull the t-stat and it should never warm up in a cold weather climate. John

hey I know it isnt the fan clutch Ive replaced that and that just makes it heat up with extended periods of slow driving ("offroading")

I need to pull the stat out and drive her around I guess Ill do that tomorrow and get back to you.

Sounds like a head crack...... maybe

Start it up with rad. cap off and see if you can see exhaust exiting cap or if coolant shoots up out of there.

Pressure tester would be the best if you can get your hands on one, checks for leaks by pressurizing the system. Start it with pressure tester on to see if compression is escaping to cooling system.

Well its definetly not the t-stat I pulled that out and it still heated up. So it either a REALLY blown HG or......a crack head or block.

I do have a 22RE that had a nasty valve noise sitting in my back yard...maybe I can use those parts if my R is junk.....:(

I had an 83 once that the water pump blades had corroded away and the water wasn't being pumped thrrough the system. Check that too.

Howdy! I've been told that heads for 22R and 22RE are not interchangable. John

I found the heads aren't interchangable too, different shaped ports and extra holes and such ...o well

I DID how ever finally pull the head off to find out!!! the HG crapped, the sets of 2 holes between the block and head that match but are blocked by the HG, the HG gave out right there and was squirting coolant into # 1 and # 4 cylinders. So tomorrow Ill drop off my head at the mill shop to get .020 taken off then put a new HG and HG shim there. and my .255 lift comp cam and new valve springs and maybe a little port job.

thanks for all the help guys!

Got the head back and noticed the worst when I got home...

a crack from a coolant passage all the way to one of the intake valve seats

sooo Idk what Im going to do now, I did however make one of my corollas run after sitting for a year so yesterday wasnt a complete lose....

yah not a real big deal. I do want to go ride some trails.

after more looking at work it looks like my heads MIGHT be the same between the 85 and the 87 the intake gasket and exhaust gasket are the same pt#.....and the EFI head has a port for the mech. fuel pump. so this weekend im going to pull the EFI head off and cross some fingers and knock on wood hopefully that head is good.

heres the reaons why I dont have more time/money for the P/U

So tonight I ended up pulling the head off my 22RE stripped it down got it shaved. turns out they work 100% the only difference is 2 extra intake bolt holes. EVERYTHING lines up fine, they even have a block off plate for the mech. fuel that is just held on by 2 bolts.

So ported the intake side ported and polished the exhaust got my 255. lift comp cam and new springs. got it all back together....battery is dead....charge it a little, crank fires sounds fine but dies because the choke is garbage and its almost 1am. so its down there charging so Im thinking get up early go put the exhaust on and run for a little bit.
