V6 Calipers on a '90 4Runner

I'm helping a friend do a brake job on his '90 22RE 4Runner, and realized that we should be able to use the larger v6 pickup/4runner calipers on his truck.
We're replacing the calipers anyway, so it would make sense to try and get the best brakes on there were can.

Can anyone verify if v6 calipers would indeed work on his 4cyl 4runner?

I can't imagine that they wouldn't, but you may need to trip the backing plate/dust shield a little. Might also be a soft pedal until you upgrade the MC to a 1" bore.

The latter '93-'95 V6 callipers will not sit flush with the edge of the rotor. There will be about 1/8" of overhang. The '89-'92 callipers are the ones you want.

Going to put some Hawk LTS pads in them, had good experience with those pads on my FZJ80.

Can anyone comment on the potential soft brake issue? I'd hate to go to the extra trouble and then have him need to get a different M/C.

You shouldn't have a problem.
I have V6 IFS calipers and the larger IFS drums on the rear.
All works fine w/stock MC. You can always upgrade if you feel the need. Just make sure you bleed the system.

1988 was the first year of the V6 in the USA mini truck...

The V6 pads are around 3/4 inch/or so... longer than the 4 bangers, I know because the desk monkey at Schucks sold me the wrong set once..... Now I look up the part numbers at home and just hand them a note with the number on it.......

If he has the factory chrome wheels like these...

The wheel will rub the larger v6 calipers.

Really? Hum, I got that same wheel as a spare and just sold the complete set that came with my truck. Good to know, guess if I get a front flat I'll have to rotate a rear up front before I put the spare on.

He has some aftermarket alloy rims, hopefully they won't rub.

You might be able to grind the caliper a little to allow them to fit. I have a set of 16" wheels so I just sold the chrome ones.

Is this true for ALL years of I4 trucks? Should '93-'95 I4 trucks use the '93-'95 V6 calipers, or the '88-'92 V6 calipers?

the reason you blead the brakes is because when you change the caliper or disconnect the lines, air is inhaled by your braking system. since air can be compressed you do not want that, so you bleed your breaks to get all of the air out so that your pedal will not be spongey and your breaks will be solid and stopp good. your break fluid cannot be compressed. a liquid cannot be compressed
