No need to call

The wheelbase multiplyer is the OLD law... thank heavens the U4WDA helped push a new law through the legal system (reason enough to join the U4: http://www.u4wda.org/ )

As for the NEW law (its actually pretty old )

41-6a-1631. Prohibitions.
(1) A person may not operate on a highway a motor vehicle that is mechanically altered or changed:
(a) in any way that may under normal operation:
(i) cause the motor vehicle body or chassis to come in contact with the roadway;
(ii) expose the fuel tank to damage from collision; or
(iii) cause the wheels to come in contact with the body;
(b) in any manner that may impair the safe operation of the vehicle;
(c) so that any part of the vehicle other than tires, rims, and mudguards are less than three inches above the ground;
(d) to a frame height of more than 24 inches for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 4,500 pounds;
(e) to a frame height of more than 26 inches for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 4,500 pounds and less than 7,500 pounds;
(f) to a frame height of more than 28 inches for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 7,500 pounds;
(g) by stacking or attaching vehicle frames (one from on top of or beneath another frame); or
(h) so that the lowest portion of the body floor is raised more than three inches above the top of the frame.
(2) If the wheel track is increased beyond the O.E.M. specification, the top 50% of the tires shall be covered by the original fenders, by rubber, or other flexible fender extenders under any loading condition.

I just checked the data plate in the door jam of my `85 4Runner and it has a GVW of 4800 lb.s. So, that means my frame can be 26 inches from the ground. And, yes my 4Runner does have a factory rear seat.

Full_M3tal, your `86 should be the same. Check the data plate in the driver side door jam. You may only need to lower it a couple of inches.

I'm pretty sure this is Utah law only, other states will be different.

Yes Jerod, I know that that is Utah law. But since I live just 3 1/2 hours from Moab and don't want any unneeded tickets. Also, the GVW rating on the data plate should help Full_M3tal.

I was just clairifying (I can't spell) so future readers don't get confused.

What's the word on police enforcing state law on out of state visitors? If you're worried about tickets, I bet you've heard of people getting them eh?

No, it means if your looking from behind, the top 50% of the tire have to have a mudflap or body covering them.

Hi Jerod

Normally the police will not write an out-of-stater a ticket for this type of violation. But, they can write you up for this. You usually have to tick them off to get this type of ticket. Then you would have to go through the hassle to deal with it in court. The one advantage that an out-of-stater has is, they can't revoke you registration. Also, if you got this type of ticket and fought it, it would usually be dismissed. An officer would have to prove that your truck was unsafe and a hazard to other motorists for the ticket to be upheld.

So, the after reading this thread, I ran into a cop at a local gas station and decided I'd ask him (in Sandpoint, ID). Officer Wheeler informed me that TRUCKS can't be over 28" high and all are required to have mudflaps. I promptly hung my head and told him I'd get in compliance ASAP and wouldn't drive my FJ40 until then. He then asked which rig was mine, and when I pointed at the '40, he had good news. Although he misidentified my 1976 SOA FJ40 for some badass J33p, he told me that there were no height restrictions nor requirements for mudflaps for SWB vehicles (i.e. FJ40s, Sammi's, and J33ps). The only requirements are that they have both front and rear bumpers, so he told me I was perfectly legal!!! He wasn't even concerned that the tires stick out of the wheel wells about 3". YIPPPPPEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Now, with that being said, I'd better get some flaps on my '85 Toy mini when I do the motor swap.....

I was so happy I almost gave him a drink of my Cap. Mo and coke!

Utah goes by vehicle weight

The legal height of your 4-Runner is 26" to the bottom of the center of the frame. Ask me how I know??? I have one.
