Real time help: fuel filter location on 3.0 V6?

A non-mechanically-inclined friend of mine just called; his 88 Runner quit running on him, on the highway about an hour from here. From what he described, I think he's got dirty gas. I don't have a manual for the 3.0; can someone tell me where the fuel filter is, so I can go out in the dark and see if I can help him out?

Dig the anger on on the bacon sammich chaser. You being angry is like Boy George not trying to be gay. Go play with your 2 inch line, some hand cream and a sock. You'll feel better.

Cool, thanks. I'm on my way, but we'll start the search there. His whole truck is a rust-bucket, including the gas tan, so I'm betting his filter is clogged. I'm going to test-bypass it with a length of hose and see what happens.

i would wait to see if someone miore experieced on the 3.0 first but most toyota filters as are in that area in those years.it will be more wor than that,if its any like my 62 or my 87 runner it has those funky ends that require brass o-rings not that easy to by-pass not without cutting but somebody will chime in

If it's in the same spot as on a 90 4runner with the 3.0 it's a pain in the ass to change! There is almost no room to get it unhooked. Yes, pass side frame somewhere...... that's where the fuel lines run..... who'd a thought huh?

Take a good asortment of tools.

I'm back!

Yes, it was the fuel filter, and yes it's located along the PS frame-rail near the firewall.

Turns out ol' buddy let the tank run down to fumes, and sucked every bit of gunk in the tank into his fuel line.

Took the filter off, blew it out with canned air, put it back on.

Checked pressure at the fuel rail, and it appeared fine.

Truck's running perfect now, and he's got a new filter and a bottle of injector cleaner on his shopping list for tomorrow.

Thanks, Mudders, for the input! I think I'm getting a case of beer for this one, so I'll make sure you all get some.
