Wierd Noises When Tires are Turned

Hi all,

When I make a sharp turn either left or right, there is a loud noise and really disturbed my mother. I did have Toyota replace the steering-rod arm that was a part of the recall. I have a 1990 4x4 Extended Cab PU. The engine is a 4cyl 22RE 5spd. I have regular 235 75R 15 tires, no lift? What could cause that. I am in 2wd and the hubs are unlocked.

Any help will be fantastic.

Steering stops, they are on the lower arm and there's one front and back on each side. You'll see the rusty little ramp that's getting scraped. Grease them up at each oil change.

There are 4 steering stops, 2 on both lower A arms, 1 in front and 1 in back....

I'm not sure what you mean by "loud noise". If it's a constant noise, could be bearings. If it's a one time POP each time you turn, something could be binding. Put it on jack stands and have someone turn it back and forth while you're down there so you can better determine what the cause is and let us know more details.

I believe that it may be the steering stops, because if I do not turn it too tight, there is no noise.

If it's the stops, they usually make noise when the wheels are turned sharp and you hit a bump, like turning into a driveway. The stops came from the factory with plastic cap on them, overtime they wear or break off, just dab a little grease on them, shuts them up.

Some time in 1995 Toyota riveted a longer flat piece of aluminium on the lower arm stop mounts. This prevents any loud squeeking and the need for the nylon bushings. I really like the improved design and recommend that if it really bothers you find a set of lower arms off a '95.

i guarantee you its the steer stops, as described multiple times above.

and it is possible to loosen the nut and turn the bolt IN.

i have the same problem on my '95 truck, only when turned to the left as far as it goes though. hope this does the trick; its quite annoying.

as for describing the sound, its a loud metal on metal scraping/creaking noise. happening for the last year or so; the Toyota dealership didnt know waht to do about it

I like the ingenuous ramp or ark the thing has so the radious widens as the wheel drops or rises............................duh.

truly, as long as the bolts that hit the steering stops are adjusted correctly, you aren't hurting anything. It is an annoying sound, I eventually just got a nutural feel for the steering and didn't hit them anymore. If it happens aside from full crank left or right, you have other problems. Turn full crank left, then drive a little ways (find a lot, or cul-de-sac. Make the noise on purpose, usually there will be a little resistance once you get turned that far, then back it off a hair while still turning, if the noise goes away, you have no worries. Grease it, but still it only lasts so long lol.

They are designed to limit the turning angle to save the CV's, if the steering was turned too far the CV would break. Just wipe a little grease on the "ramp" face that Wristy's pointing to in the first pic, repeat as needed, waterproof grease like boat trailer wheel bearing grease will last longer than regular grease.

You guys are great! I just bought a 93, and had the same symptom. Initially assumed the CV on one side was bad. You guys saved me. Problem solved! Now, anyone have a used ARB bumper or Warn/ similar for sale? RIX
