4runner soft tops

I'm looking for a nice 4runner soft top for this summer. Kayline recently went out of buisness and I don't think I'm willing to pay for a new can-back. Does anyone out there know where I can get my hands on a new or used kayline or a used canback?

Brian

I called Can-Back a year or so ago just to get info and pricing from them. When they told me how much I said "No way would I pay that much, what else you got", then they offered me an older version, without the rubberized coating on the inside, for half price They also threw in some large scraps, the stuff that is cut away during production, so I could do my door panels. Asking never hurts. GOOD LUCK!

How does the can back perform at highway speeds?

I'm curious about the cheaper verson of the canback. The ones I've seen are great but just not worth doubling the price of the whole car.

Pics of my 88 w/ can-back:

Yes, it's louder than the hard top, but not much. Hard top only goes on for Winter (so I can use the 4Runner as a storage device. ). The entire union can be unbolted and taken off in one piece; no real need to break it down if you have a place to store as a whole. No leaks, sides and back roll up safari style. Very, very nice.

I called them earlier today. They are no longer available. God d*** it. 4Runner tops just got alot more difficult and $$$$ to find. How much for your canback or kayline?

Really? I knew I should have bought that company when it went up for sale last time; lots of good opportunity with it...

I'll sell you mine for $1200 + shipping. Includes the roof-rack mounts.

That rack was made by the PO and he kept it when I picked up the truck... It was just a cobbled together unit made out of 1x1 tubing. It bolted up to the Can Back rack mounts (which I have) with some u-bolts. I really like the Can Back mounts, to be honest; if my garage was taller (only have a 7' door), I'd consider building another rack/basket around the mounts.

Kayline isn't making tops anymore. Canback is but that large sum of money would be better suited for a SAS. I can't justify spending that much for their top.

Your post said "them," so I assumed incorrectly that you meant Can Bak...

Love my Can-Back. Didn't love the prices on the rack or mounts, made my own faux raingutter type mounts.

Works great at 80+. Wouldn't use another top.

Let me know as soon as you find out. I need this thing by may 18th. I'm leaving for Cali for the summer with my toy on that date!

I wish I could let myself spend that much money. Those tops look great and I know they are high quality.

Thanks for the info guys.

Brian

This is the company that took over for Kayline. Or basically they bought the rights to all their designs I believe.

i went to a army surplus store. found a green canvas lean-to. i used that for a top. used the rope on each end, tied it down to the bolts. makes it look like a turtle back. very cool. i never did take any pics. will this summer

I talked with can back shortly last night. The guy said they are in the process of constructing 4RUNNER tops right now, about thirty have already been made. They all come with side windows and are available in black, grey, and tan. bkg, I have one more question about their top.

If you don't have a roof rack attached, can you remove the whole piece of canvas while leaving the framing in place if you want more open air then just rolling the sides and back of the can back up or is the roof of the top not easily removable w/ the frame attached?

Thanks

I have an extra one for a toyota pickup I'll sell you...wouldn't really do you much good though b/c it's way different than the 4runner. I love the one I have on my 4runner. But is stole it from a guy for $400. It's the stainless one too. There's a reason they cost twice as much as the kaylines. Kayline sucks...they are a complete piece of shit. Your better off throwing $500 in the toilet. The don't last and they are quality is poor. Plus you have to drill a million holes in your body.
