Locking the rear
Hopefully someone over here has done this.
I tore the rear out of my 87 4-runner(I'll post in the readers rides when I get a chance to load the pics) in the hopes of welding or spooling it. Its a barely street legal trail rig. I locked my 66 40 and thought this would be a walk in the park. Jokes on me. So the questions are: Why does an 87 diff seem to have an ABS sensor on the top? How do I get in there, Or has anyone done this(and have pics.) Or would the spool come with good directions. I have been in the search here and a bunch of other sites and none of those rears look like mine. __________________ SEAN 85 extra cab Go outside and do that! |

I think mini-trucks diffs are EASIER to work on than Cruisers. None of that C-clip stuff to mess with.
If you have an ABS sensor on the top of your diff, then it is not the original, it has been swapped out for one from a later V6 truck. Got a picture? __________________ KB1OSF '87 Toyota xcab SR5 - SAS'd, stuff '98 Lexus ES300 '04 Toyota Highlander |

Yes, that helps a lot. That is a later V6 diff, probably from a 2nd gen 4Runner. You can leave the ABS sensor in, it doesn't hurt anything. If you're tearing it apart anyway, I believe Marlin sells a freeze-plug type deal that will block off the hole so you can remove it.

The ABS sensor didnt hurt any thing so I wasn't worried about it. It just seemed odd.
I see it on the link(thanks 2nd gen). Now that I know what it is I need to find how to tear into it. It has little view windows that limit my access to the spiders. Is there a way to get to them? __________________ SEAN 85 extra cab Go outside and do that! Last edited by Straydog; 03-04-07 at 02:20 PM. |

It's not that different than a Cruiser diff to tear it apart, it's just the carrier that is different, since it has 4 spiders instead of 2. If you're doing a spool, you just take the carrier out, pop the ring gear off (brass drift & hammer), then press the ring onto the spool. You'll have to press side bearings onto the spool too. Then it's just a matter of setting the backlash, the pinion depth shouldn't need to change.
I highly recommend getting ahold of a Factory Service Manual for this, you'll need to get one for '88 and up, since that is when the V6 engine came out. __________________ KB1OSF '87 Toyota xcab SR5 - SAS'd, stuff '98 Lexus ES300 '04 Toyota Highlander |

Great, I'll order a manual(the wife will be thrilled
)I've always wanted to learn to set up a rear. Guess there's no time like the present. Thanks.
