newbie '86 PU help

Hey guys, have a couple of problems looking for some suggestions. I have an 86 Toy pu a PO did an engine swap and put in an old 22R near as I can figure its an '82, mated to the original (4? speed) automatic transmistion, now the OD seems to have stopped functioning, and I have no idea why, was told it might just be a solinoid? does this sound possible? any suggestions? or is the tranny FUBAR?

and the other problem is sometimes when I go to start the truck I get nothing no click no whirl nothn, if I get out leave the key on, and by pass everything and go straight to the starter the truck will start right up..... I think its a relay? does that sound right? (if it is where would it be? checked the ones in the box on the fender looked alright, are there more? or is that it?)

Thanks.

Sounds like you have the transmission selector switch out of alignment of dis connected. That can give you both symptoms.
