Header install

'84 22R

What's the pipe that runs across my exhaust manifold & ties into it across the top?

I want to install a header this weekend & want to know if I can just plug it off, or if it needs to stay.

Thanks

That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure

The header doesn't have any way to connect the egr pipe, are there any pro's/con's to removing it plugging it off at the egr valve?

As y'all can see, I'm clueless with the emissions systems.

Without it you might (or will) fail emissions.
Not sure if there's anymore set backs.

There are a ton of different models of headers for the 22r and 22re. I used to sell them for a company and we would have to know a few things about the egr and 02 sensor placement. I am pretty sure that thorley offers a header that will still allow you to run your egr so that you can still pass emissions. They are a 50 state legal header company.

I did see those somewhere on the net, but I got the complete exhaust system including the headers for free from a buddy that had it on his '84 before he started his small block swap.

The headers don't have any outlets for the egr. I won't install it if it's going to affect my emissions, at least until 2009 when I'm exempt.

You will fail

99% sure. I failed when my pulse valve was not pulsing which is associated with that tube. You have to replace the tube if replacing the pulse valve as a clogged tube will bust your new pulse valve. Downey makes a header that works with that. I failed emissions until I replaced oxygen sensor, air pump, EACV and pulse valve (plus pulse valve pipe tube)

LC Engineering also makes a header that has provisions for the "secondary air injection manifold." Just got mine in the mail. Should go on this weekend!

I will most likely look into this at a later date.

It's my work rig, so down time is a no-no right now and I can't afford to run into any unseen problems.

It runs good right now, and blows through emissions better than any other rig I've owned!..

Thanks for all the replies.

Um... am I crazy for thinking that 15 min. on a drill press might fix your problem?

...anyone???

I'd say it depends on the design of the headers, it may be an easy fix, or a great way to ruin a good header...... Someone try and let us know.
