It's common to upgrade the turbo to one from a Supra, there are kits and parts out there to do it. Check eBay for the parts. There is a good email discussion group on Yahoo specifically for the 22RTE engine, several knowledgable people on there that can give details and help. I'd post a link to the group page, but Yahoo is being a whiney little bitch and not working at all for me this morning.

My friend is not looking to get an upgrade. He's just looking to get a replacement.

Try ebay.
A new or rebuilt replacement is going to cost him a pretty penny.
Upgrading it might be cheaper.

But that's what I'm saying, you can get a better turbo for cheaper, with benefits and no additional work.

Here's the Yahoo group: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/22RTE-Trucks/

Good luck.

Hello,
New guy here from SE MN, near La Crosse, WI, and I have a 15 yr old son who just bought a 1989 reg cab 4wd p/u, and it has a turbo 22re in it showing 118k miles. We just found out that the frame is bad, so we would be willing to part with it. The motor runs and sounds very strong to me, and pulls very well, especially compared to my 86 xtra cab 4wd w/22r carb and a 5-spd. The 1989 has no options except a toolbox, it is a 5-spd also, and we would let the whole works go for around $1k, just what we have into it.......Give me a call, or email me back, we can talk. My name is Sean, my cell is (608) 317-0450, or after 7pm central time call me at 507-896-0420. my email is fatflht@hotmail.com, if you would rather emai me.....
thanks and good luck!

You are way better off up grading turbo, a guy on Ebay he has recon T-3/4? and a custom ext. manifold for $400 havent looked in a while but he's still there try other toyota motor #'s/models. Its rumored that there are no longer parts for the old (cave man/old technolagy) turbos. (I own two) Include labor rates to rebuild, parts if you can find, turbo if you can find, and the benifit? Any old turbo is junk,(*****EXC. FREE******) air flow manigement= eficientcy/power

Okay, cool so my buddy should just get an upgrade. Does anyone know specifically what he should get?

I know alot of you are trying to help and I appreciate it, but I just need specifics. Like which model of turbos from Garrett and Turbonetics.
