i would NOT get rid of that box.

that kind of bed isnt availible here. and i think its way better than the smooth beds.

re welding the lip at top is gonna be tricky

So my idea for this bed is to remove 12 to 14 inches from the rear and end up with a 46 inch long box???
That is approx where the frame rails end...

I wish I cold get a bed like that to fit my '87, those are really nice. I had a bed like that on my old '84 2WD truck, it was really handy having those cargo hooks. I prefer the 2-hand tailgate latches too.

I bobbed the bed of an '80 mini with the same lip around the top about 5 years ago. It wasn't that bad. Just be sure to tack weld in a brace in the box w/ a little angled downtube right in front of your front cut prior to cutting. Other than that, it's all about keeping your cuts plumb and welding carefully. When I did it, it was my first welding undertaking, and it wasn't pretty, but if you've got some welding know how, it's doable. Go for it!!

I bobbed any 89 (like your bed, without the "lip") turned out great and yes 14 inches is what i took out. it will turn out fine, thats why god made bondo..

take all measurements from the front edge (by cab) of the bed to the back and use a grease pencil to mark... measure 2,3 times then cut

Here is a pic of my '82 bed that I took 14" out. The top lip is not bad just build up you weld and grind it smooth . For the cut across the bed I drilled a small hole through the outside sheet metal right above the floor of the bed on each side, ran a string across and pulled tight, and then lightly spray painted the bed over the string. Remove the string and you have a nice straight line to cut on. I agree with extremetoy1 measure, check, double check and cut. Take some pics and do a write up would be great to see it done.

AWSOME job! looks good-the rocker/rear roll pan area looks good too!

I will post some of the 89 bed I did (for a friend, FREE believe it or not!)
how did the inside of your bed turn out? if it werent for the double wall be of the 89 it wouldve looked like poop! the inside of the bed actually turned out incredible, but we had to "work" the outside edges where we welded it back together inwards where the weld was so we didnt have to grind much down.
