Best axle for sas

Is there any difference in axles in the early mini trucks? Would an 80 series axle be better? I know where I can get an 81 axle, but I am wondering if an 85 would be better. I'm sure this has been beat to death and I am going to be shunned away from this section for asking stupid questions.

1985 would be the best mini axle to get since it is trussed all the way from the diff to the driver side knuckle.

An 80 series would be great....high pinion diff, larger birfs(similar sized inner axles however) factory locker if you find that version...would need to install perches, if you did not decide to use the link mounts.

Have fun!

Thanks for the info poser. I had wondered why I have seen so many that say they have an 85 front end. Would an earlier axle be just as good if I trussed it? I have been calling wrecking yards to see if they have any 80 series with the lockers but they have all been stripped :(

the earlier 80's ones are fine once you truss them.. Actualy better ground clearence because you truss it on the top instead of bottom..

IMOP an FJ60 axle is a great option aswell, it will be almost the same width as the rear and larger ring gear.. But the SAS Hangers may not work the same as the minitruck axle..

I vote 80 series but it's wider than the mini axles, which IMO are better for flex anyway. Otherwise mini trucks with the hi-pinion diff.

And good luck finding steering for the 80 series axle. Yeah, it's a great axle, but there's only one company making arms, and they aren't doing them en-mass anymore, and they are also not (last I heard) machining the knuckles to make the arms work.

Any 81-85 mini truck axle will work well. Buy a High-pinion center section, truss and enjoy.

Like said above, steering and leaf springs are an issue with an 80 series axle, it is also full time 4wd there is a convesion but it is fairly spendy, if you go 80 series I would suggest linking the front while your at it. Cristo is in the works of producing 80 series arms.

I see so the 80 axle would be cool but it would be hard to make it work properly. Is the 60 series axle wider than the rear axle on an ifs truck? I know where I can get one of those, but aren't they more expensive to set up than a mini axle as far as gears and lockers? I guess the best bet would just truss a mini axle and go high pinion diffs. Thanks for the help guys. Now off to find an axle...

ARB is going to be the same money for either.

Gear set for the Land Cruiser is going to be more $$$

fj60 front is the same width as an ifs rear, it would be kinda silly to have a bigger R&P up front though

What size tires are you going to run? For me I wish I would have just went one ton from the start. I havent broken anything yet in my axles BUT I plan to go way bigger in horsepower and I want to do front digs sometime in the near future.

BTW Im going with True Hi 9 center w/ 60 outers

I really like the look of 37s but will prolly stay with 35s. Will the stock axles be strong enough if I go with chrome molly shafts and longfields? I plan on staying with the 22re for now... It seems to have enough power but that's with 33s and 4.88 gears.

for 35s the mini truck axle in my opinion is your best bet. It will be the easiest of all of the axles to swap and is plenty strong for 35s and a heavy right foot.

I have 39.5s and im not easy on mine at all...I havent had any damage....yet

Isotel...what are the steering options for the fj 60 axle? How easy would it be to go high steer?

I was planning on going 5.29s. if my 4.88s won't be low enough. I was thinking of doing marlins 4.7s in the tcase and maybe double it as well with a stock case. I would still like it to be driveable on road and do great off road.

84 and 85 mini axles are both trussed the whole way I'm pretty sure. Plus if you stick with a mini truck axle you can swap diffs front to back in a pinch.

I'm pretty happy with my d44 now that it has warn shafts (anything but Moser, nice guy, crappy heat treat) and CTMs. This is with 23 sp 2.28 + 4.7 and 4.88s. I'm running 38.5 sx and so far 3 years no carnage. I would not want to go bigger than 38s however.

If you are considering 5.29s you can't match ratio w/Dana. The 4.88s the only choice for toy matching dana ratios iirc.

A 60 would have been a better choice, have you looked at diamond axles 9"/60 hybrid housing? Brian's a great guy. They also have a custom toy although I have no idea why? If you are going to go custom on the front suspension why look for a stock axle? jmo but if you don't break you only have to buy it once fwiw

Edit: forgot the link
