2LTE needing new head

I have a LJ 78 which has same 2LTE engine as Surf/4runner and I assume my head is now cracked. I would like to hear from someone who has fitted 3L head to this engine. Want to know what is involved, does the 3L head go straight on or is there some modification needed. Another option I am looking into is to fit a more powerful engine as the 2.4 & auto trans is slower than a tortoise off the mark. I am wondering what engines will bolt up to the Auto and work out. Would be great to hear from someone who has done this.
