4 Runner Starter Removal

Changing the starter out in my Daughter's '97 4-runner. It seems to be held captive after unbolting and I cannot get it out from the space where it is located. What is the easiest way to get it out? Do I remove the steering, brake lines, take it out thru the side of the wheel well, drop it out thru the bottom, lift it out thru the top? I don't want to take half the truck apart to get it out. Any real-time suggestions will be appresiated.

Thanks.

Thanks for the link..... I don't know why Toyota thought it would be funny to make starter removal such a pain! I've done 3 22REs and a 3VZE and they aren't any fun either.

I once helped a friend replace his starter on a Nissan Pathfinder.....we had to dis-assemble a good part of the truck to get the starters out/and back in.
