Engine swap Possibilities

Ok, so my 89 truck is looking a little ragged and I'm considering stopping use as a dd. This means I get to play with it now . So I've been looking to SAS it and swap out the engine for something a little more......shall we say powerful. I love the 22re so I'm still not sure if just rebuilding it or replacing it still might be worth it. I'm really not interested in the v8 swaps. I'm thinking supra engine. Have done some reading on it looks doable and kind of fun. I then started thinking if anyone has ever done a ford(yamaha) sho engine. I wrenched for ford a number of years ago(job security ) and it was by far the best engine for that Ford used then. Power, dependability, performance, all outstanding. Of course it has to be the yamaha engine in the earlier sho's. Anyone ever seen it done? I have not seen anything on-line about swaps like this. If anyones got info on one or ideas, I'm listening. Thanks!!!

I've never heard of that swap..... Sounds like we have a guinnea pig!!!! Welcome to mud by the way

You may have trouble finding a bellhousing to adapt to the toy tranny though.....

Yes, I thought of the bell housing issue as well. I'm not sure yet, but the bolt pattern maybe the same as a 5.0L. I started looking into that a little. Will be looking some more. I know later years ford went back to a 3.0L v-6 built by them and retained the transmission they used with the yamaha engine. I am fairly sure the 3.0L had the same bolt pattern as the 5.0. Thats what I'm looking to confirm. If that works then I can easily use an adapter. Still not sure if its worth doing though. Kind of sounded like fun........

Welcome to the board!

One of my concerns with using a motor like that, would be parts availability. My experience with Detroit vehicles using other manufacturer's engines or other parts (especially in limited quantities) is that after a few years, parts become difficult to locate and/or take weeks to get.

If you decide to go that route, be sure to keep us posted on how it goes.

After looking at bolt patterns I discovered that it does have the same pattern as the 3.0L but they are different than the 5.0L. So that will pose problems right off the bat..... I am doubting that there are any adapters already made for the 3.0L vulcan engine out there for swaps. My basis for that belief comes from the fact that I don't think too many would want to use that engine in very much. The search continues

Not sure what you could use for a transmission. Bell housing issues if no adapter plates are available.

SHO's were front wheel drives... stock tranny isn't going to work, unfortunately.

So just hook some drive shafts to the CV ouputs and get some portal axles geared way down!!!!

You realize that will only work if the engine is mounted in the center of the vehicle... It has been done before - the Rhino's use Honda engines mounted this way.

I was joking, It wouldn't be a very good option for a full size "real" vehicle. Just thinking out loud. Interesting that they use them in the Rhinos though.

My $.02.... Supra Motor, I have done 3 of these and they ROCK! also who doesn't want to keep toyota a toyota? With the Hemi head this thing just GUSHES power not to mention the low end torque. Get a donor refresh it and take off.

You have to change the bellhousing and a few clutch components, After talking to numerous people I found that Centerforce had all of what we needed ( minus the BH) or new the part #'s. I have a list I wold be glad to share when and if I find them ( newer HD )

Yes, I'm liking the supra idea better and better. After looking around a bit I would need a serious machine shop and $$$ to get what I need done using the yamaha motor. Any recommended years of supras better than any others?

You're looking for an 86.5-92 Supra....I'm not sure if there are any noticeable differences between the years.

Also, if you are only looking for an NA 7m, NOT the Turbo, 88-92 Cressidas use the 7M also. The Cressidas and NA Supras use a W58 trans, so if you got the bellhousing with the motor, your W56 tranny will pretty much just bolt up.

If you go the Turbo route, you will still need to find an NA bellhousing to work with your W-series trans.

Supra swappers are still waiting on someone to come up with a custom bell to mate an R151 trans behind a 7M.

You wanna take a look at the forums on www.Supracharged.com

Rob seems to be the foremost expert on this swap.

Unless u have lots of money i would stick to chevy. a 350 or 383 will have alot more power than the supra. And u wont have to look around for adapters. like my insurance agent told me."keep it simple stupid" no offence.

You can make your own bellhouse for the 7M to R150F like I did in my previous swap, but I would suggest using a newer engine like the 2JZ series.
I replaced my 7M with a Lexus 2JZ-GE 2 weeks ago and I must conclude that it's a far better engine. Smoother, stronger and better fuel economy.
And that without my turbo working at all for now.
Downside is that they are more expensive and somewhat harder to swap.
This is how it looks in my '90 4R before (7M-GE):

I still have the custom bellhouse from my previous swap. I promised it to someone in Canada, if he's not interested anymore it's for sale (or a parts swap).
This is how it looks (and how I made it):



It's been used 3-4 years without any gearbox, clutch or other problems and it's a direct bolt-on for a 7M to R150F/R151.

3rz 2.7L would be a better swap IMO, but the 7MGE is a good one too.

I did a 7M-GE swap into my '85 pickup by myself last xmas - took about 7 full days but I had already rebuilt the engine before that. It will cost you about double what you initially expect. There's a million little things you'll need, even if you think you have all your parts ahead of time like I did. Prepare to piss money into the wind...

Sure is nice turning 37's, though.

sho swap

Just in case any one is still interested, from my research the sho engine can be coupled with an aerostar bellhousing and with a custom adaptor plate be coupled with a mustang t5 tranny. Now thats the setup i am looking but i dont know what tranny setup you would want to use for mudding.
Just thought i would put my 2 cents in.
