Gear Ratios and 31" tires

Hi all,

I would like to know how to check what gears I have on the rear end?

Also, if I switch out to 31 inch tires, would I have to switch the gears at all?

I am driving a 90 4x4 Extended Cab Toyota PU with a 22RE and 5speed. I have 235 75 R 15 tires on it now.

Thanks,

Mark

You should have 4:11's, and you won't need to re-gear. You'll notice a slight decrease in power, but the 22re doesn't have too much to begin with.

You don't HAVE TO switch gears, and you'll have adequate power to drive it around, but putting 31's on a 4.11 geared 22RE powered xcab will reduce what little acceleration gumption it has and screw up the shift points...you won't be using 5th gear much. It's much nicer with the correct(4.56) gears, IMHO.

I just moved to a 31X10.50 BFG Mud on my 22re. I have noticed minimal difference in accleleration and/or power. My engine has 165k miles, albeit very well cared for but nevertheless, I have not noticed anything significant.

Point being, +2 on NOT needing gears.

Bah! There's thousands of toys out there with 31's and 4.10 gears. I'm sitting on 33's with 4.10s and it's not the worst thing ever.
