Question Buying a Hilux and need some guidance!!!!

I am about to decide on purchase of a 1991 Hilux. I have 2 options. One option includes someoen I know and trust and the other involves importing from an unknown (Ed Walker @ Reddex... anyone know him?) I am also getting a little concerned with the apparent challenges with the heads in the 2 litre turbo engines. this will be my first diesel and I was lloking forward to the legendary reliability but it seems I might be getting in over my head!! I have heard great things about Luxury Imports in Calgary and alth9ough I am not buyinh from them I was going to get them to do some work whilst I am in Calgary to do what I can to help encourage a reliable vehicle.

Any advice? Things to ask or look for. I have been reading a ton and learned a lot so I have covered the basics I believe but all info and help is certainly appreciated. Did I even post this in the proper place?

As far as teh reliability of the Hilux, is it really that bad or if you take care of it and don't bag the heck out of it can I expect a fun time with it and relativley worry free? Just need a little encouragement I think.

Thanks guys and I look forward to being apart of sucha great forum.

Well I've brought in my own Hilux and I'll say that it is not for the weak of heart.

No small ordeal and some very long nights.

However, the trucks are great, BUT

And that's a big BUT

Yes there are problems with the 2.4L Diesel heads. There are other problems, but none as serious as the heads.

If you're coming to Calgary, talk to Mike and Pro-Active Mechanics and he'll let you know all the issues and what kind of costs to expect.

My understanding is you are looking at a $3000 repair bill.

Something to keep in mind.

Otherwise a great little truck.

are you buying a surf or pickup?
if it is a pickup then a '91 would have the 3L engine which is supposed to be reliable. just got my '89 hilux double cab. from silverpeaktrading.com the truck had some mainteneace done in japan at techno toyota before it was shipped, like rust protection, fluid changes and timing belt and preload and repack front hubs and a crap load of stuff. the truck runs great. after ordering it I found out more about the potential problems with orderring a truck you have never seeen. mine is great but could have beena real lemon.
I would probably go with out back or luxury imports the second time jsut for the security and peace of mind that they will help you out to get your truck on the road.
the 2.4t seems to have cracking head problems, so like everyone on this forum says put an exhaust temp guage as soon as you can.
good luck.

I will be getting a surf, just love the trucks. I think I will go with a fellow from Regina I ahve known for a while. Great guy, trustworthy and the truck is already here. reddex has a a truck with more of what we want (sunroof, not a red interior! and about $2000 cheaper) but the truck won't be arriving here until the 15th and I have no idea about Reddex or Ed the guy I am dealing with. Again I have talked to him in Japan but the scummiest of fellows can seem nice.

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in Vancouver to work on these and inpsect it to get it on the road. Is it cheaper to replace the head before it goes?
