Rav4 pointers

I know where I can get a Rav4 for cheap or free. It has a blown engine (not sure what exactly is munched). Is it worth putting any time into one of these? I'm thinking it is a 99 or 01 but I'm not sure.

It would be a commuter for me, so it would see some snow driving on paved surfaces. Maybe for trips to Lake Pryamid, ie gravel roads with a few sandy spots, driving on the beach.

All I know is I got on an 04 and it was small. How tall are you.....

If you have the time and $ to get it running cheap, who doesn't like a cheap car right? And it is a Toyota! Not that I'm partial or anything.

I was/am considering either a Rav4 or CRV as a commuter. Both get excellent reviews from both the magazines and owners.

They also hold their value very well, so if you can get it free and it just needs a motor, I think you'll do well.

i have had a difficult time finding maintenece parts for them. except from the dealer. Like when i get one in my shop.
but they are usally a day out, and over priced. but the good thing is, we have cruizer dan to get the parts from if need be.
i think you will be satisfied with one, but a 4x4 is not to be taken seriously. street pounding is all you want to do with it.

our '99 gets a steady 25 mpg. it's great in the snow, never gets stuck. 100K miles and have never done anything except maintenance stuff (thanks, CDan) and unplugged the seatbelt light on it, except it had some alignment stuff we had to work out.
