It's probably leaking somewhere or getting burned up...... Hahaha!
![]() Most likely getting burned, that's not tooooooo bad of an oil loss, but slow enough that you wouldn't see it coming out the tail pipe. __________________ Jerod Online Toyota Parts Catalog!!! 89 4Runner "The James Caird" 01 4Runner, for my Jefferson State Cruisers |

3.0L drivers are use to getting it at the pumps anyway , how would you know ... I would think you have the ol' head gasket problem .

3 qts in 3000 miles isnt to bad of a oil consumpion. i would however expect to see that happen in a truck with another 70Kmiles. do drive it hard, and run the snot out of it?
do a compression check. if they are all realitvly the same the consumpion is normal. |

I'm sorry, but I don't think a quart of oil every 1000 miles is "normal". Something is wrong.
Get a leakdown test. This will tell you where it's going. __________________ KB1OSF '87 Toyota xcab SR5 - SAS'd, stuff '98 Lexus ES300 '04 Toyota Highlander |

An american made engine with +125K on it that only used 1 quart per 1K would shock me. I could be biased because I'm used to 2F and big block GMC engines that take +7 quarts for an oil change.

Well, my '87 with 202K on it might need a 1/2 quart top off between oil changes, sometimes not. I go 7,000-7,500 miles on my Amsoil, and I check it every time I get gas.
A quart of oil every 1000 miles is too much for only 133K. __________________ KB1OSF '87 Toyota xcab SR5 - SAS'd, stuff '98 Lexus ES300 '04 Toyota Highlander |

Hello, I am new to this (Internet stuff) my cruiser use heaps of oil when towing. I suspect valve guides as when I stop for fuel and start up again she puffs heaps of smoke. Can I do the leakdown test myself and if so could someone please explain the procedure. Thanks

the best advice i can give you is start a new thread. in the right cruizer section.
you need to contact Snapon.com and buy a leakdown tester. its easy, you just thread it into the sparkplug hole, apply shop air. monitor the initial psi ( or in your case Kpa) and watch it to see if it drops. but based on the description you do have leaking valve stem seals. as the oil is slung around the engine, after it stops running, the oil seeps down through the valvestem seals. as it pools up on top of the piston, it smokes when started. if it were rings leaking, it would smoke during driving, all the time. not at start ups. |

If it were valve seals it would also smoke driving around caused high engine vacuum sucking it through the valve seals.Besides his cat converter could be burning it up too.I have had some problems with oil control rings on toyota. the ring gaps line up caused by bore taper and poof oil burning.Just my 2 cents worth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
