3F Issues

Hi Guys...

Whilst the car's due out on the 4th of July for the new engine, I figured I may as well spend some time resolving issues that have been plaguing me for a week or two.

During the "rev" range, the car's tacho goes WILD and it behaves like a tempermental three year old between 600-900 rpm and 1350-1850rpm. It's also starting to show signs of it between 2300-2600rpm.

Basically it misses over these revs, misses, backfires, lurches, jolts... you name it, it's really annoying and has almost gotten me collected at a number of intersections.

The vehicle's fitted with LPG and you can sometimes hear the backfire come out the intake instead of the exhaust. The carby was rebuilt by me and the float was set, but I imagine that this might be the problem and/or it might be out again.

I'm really really really unsure on how to tune a carby and my mechanic was instructed to fix this last time and promised me he did, but obviously hasn't. The car's got 280,000 kms on the clock... 170,000 miles or so? .. In 4 weeks or so it goes in to have the 1UZ-FE fitted to it, but I don't have my other car anymore (it's sold in the morning!) so I have nothing else to drive while this problem resolves.

Would appreciate any help at all.

I haven't done anything yet, I'll probably start with plugs, leads and points! Leads are 8000 km old so still basically new!

The backfiring in the intake may mean a valve adjustment is necessary.

It could also mean LPG is igniting in the intake. It sometime blows the filter box to pieces so be careful.

I cant see the carb settings such as the float being relevant to the LPG.
The carby tuning section in the Gregorys 507 manual is simple and easy to follow and costs only $29.95 from Kmart

Ive seen identical symptoms on LPG powered 3F on 2 other vehicles in as many months but the owners havent bothered to reply on how it was fixed.
Both of them were high mile 3F.
I would ask around at LPG conversion shops.

Whats happened to the diesel conversion??

Diesel got way too expensive way too fast. I'm sticking with LPG/Petrol and going for the 1UZ-FE as the truck doesn't do much "long" trails... longest hop it'll ever do between fuel stops will be about 600-700km. It carries HEAPS enough fuel for that... 120 litre main petrol tank, 80 litres of LPG and 2 x 30 litre jerrys...

I'll see about the valves, but they were only done like 10,000 ago not even.

The car also runs insanely rich, and floods every time you start it on petrol even if you dont' use the accelerator/choke. To get it started I physically have to crank it 5-10 times, flick the fuel switch to "off" (between petrol/lpg) and then start it and flick it back to petrol!

I have no freaking idea what's wrong with it :(

All this is a perfect reason to go diesel

When my 3F got to those miles the cam was too worn to adjust the valves and was making little backfiring noises.

Maybe you could buy a used carb for $50 in running order and swap it in for 4 weeks.
You can usually sell all the good 3F parts after the swap to recoup your money.
I got a tidy little sum for all the outside stuff on my 3F

I haven't quite figured out what's happening with my 3F after the swap. My mechanic wants to keep it and credit me some cash on the bill, but I'm not 100% what's going to go on.

I'm swapping in a 1uz-fe which is possibly the world's most bulletproof engine. The only thing that ever breaks on them is the water pump and not only is this one freshy rebuilt, it's also got a new water pump

My carb's completely rebuilt. I think I'll just shut up and put up until the 1uz goes in and let someone else worry about the 3f. Trying to find a carb for a 3f is like finding a needle in a haystack. There don't seem to be -any- in Victoria.

The 1UZ runs well on LPG like most toyota engines.
I hope you do a build up thresd here

Whats a mechanic want an old 3F for .You cant give them away here. Someone was selling a rebuilt 3F with a few thousand klms for $1000 and couldnt get anyone interested.

Don't need LPG info. My best mate's an LPG fitter by trade

I just wanted to fix this lame revving problem. I'll try timing, thanks crushers.

Rosco, 3F's sell in Victoria for 1400 dollars engine & accessories (Carb, etc). You can't find them if you had 10,000 to burn on one though. They just don't exist.

Turned out to be a timing issue. Timing was so far out we're suprised it still ran. Will rectify it in the morning and see if that irons out all the problems

All sorted, thanks for the tips guys.

Timing was spot on ... 7 BTDC

Dwell was 58!!!!!!!!! .. it's now 39, which is 41 +- 4 where it should be. We set it a tiny bit lower because as the points burn, it gets higher.

Feels like a new truck!
