Can you get a 70 Series in the USA?

OK I am prepared to be railed for asking this question that is probably buried in some thread from 5 years ago but I did do a search and found a little bit of info but thought people may want to chime in with their own 2 cents . So when looking at the Readers Rides sticky there are some 70 series Cruisers in the US but, how I guess is my question and are they still obtainable? I have seen a lot of Canadians have obtained JDM style ones straight from Japan! I have also seen, from going on Toyota Colombia and Toyota Venezuela you can still buy them brand new down there!!!!! Then again I guess this is me being the typical guy that wants what he can't have...
I am not picky like some for petrol vs diesel but I would prefer left hand drive. Thanks a lot
barrypt5

ps maybe I should just fly to Venezuela buy one and drive it back!

You can't title or register the Japanese vehicles in the US. You can however get an 85-87 BJ70 from Canada and get that all legal in the States.

Not sure about your idea of driving home from Venezuela, but my guess is that a 70 series from there would be too new to register here. It would be a fun trip though.

Unfortunately, the only 7 series you can legally get in the USA are the BJ-70s sold in Canada in the mid 80s. You'll occasionally find them for sale in Canada, but you have to check very well if they are in good shape, too much snow and salt...

There are some beefed up legally titled un the US, from people who imported them from Canada, but be prepare to pay top $$$ for them.

You can wait three years and import an 85 manufactured in 1984, then you can legally import it from anywhere in the world.

I did a lot of research like a year ago and couldn't find any legal way to bring any 7 series other than the Can spec BJ-70s and got really frustraded

Good luck anyways...

I think that Darian Gap problem needs to be solved with an expedition of Land Cruisers.

It's not just emissions and airbags...there is more to it than that. I don't know all the specifics. I do know that glass is a big deal though. Has to be USDOT approved, which a vehicle from a non US market would not be.

not necessarily, most of the glass on the JDM imports have the proper stampings...
air bags is the big deal as well as side beam reinforcement...

Bruce, just let me know when you wish to tackle the Darian Gap...

I got mine from someone who imported it into the states legally. There is documentation out there, as well as in the forum. There is a lot of info out there, you just have to search for it. One of the better ones I have come across is here

I live in Venezuela...

Hey guys, I'm new aruond here... I just posted a question this morning regarding my 70 series... but as it comes with the 1FZ-F engine I had to ask on the 80 series section

The newer 71 series is still being sold here, it comes as said on another reply with the 1FZ-FE engine, it has 4 seat belts, also side reinforcements (inside doors).

Mine is a '97 model, so it has no seat belts on the back seats, it's carburated (I hate it but nothing I can do hehe) and it has slight differences with the new one which remains almost the same as 20 years ago...

No 7X series has airbags here, and as I know neither around the world... I guess as it's not a car designed for being in the city some safety devices are not considered to be present in that kind of car, maybe I'm wrong

If anyone who wants to see the specs of the new 7X series sold in Venezuela and speaks or reads spanish you can check www.toyota.com.ve there are some picts too

Hi Cuervo ,I was wondering if those rollbars for the 79 series pick up are standard?
In Australia we would have to buy that separately but its a good idea considering the rollovers here.
I was also curious as to what carb the 1FZ uses?
The carbed 1FZ would have to be miles ahead of the old 3F

Rosco, I really don't know which model of carb has my car... I could send u a pict of it if that works for u =)

The bars I mentioned come inside the doors. a roll cage has to be made by a third party as I did.

Yes, the rollbars are standard 79 series pick up in Venezuela.

I think the Darian Gap expedition would be very cool, and very disappointing.
You are basically driving across a swap. I did some research on this.
It is possible, but most people hire guides between villages to show them the best and safest way of traveling. Not many of our vehicles would make the trip, I include myself there. I doubt my 80 would do it unless I install a Slee 6" lift and 35" MT (or bigger, and portals would be nice too).

And if you do make it, you end up in guerilla ruled drug country Columbia, and I am sure they would just love to have our cruisers. It's noted as the most dangerous place to travel on earth.

Sorry to be the pessimist.

Cheers,
Nick
