Hi guys
11/96 HJZ75 troopy (aus based) with a bad problem!
This has just started happening... and the best way to describe is it is almost likel i am trying to start the car with the wrong key..
Is def the right key!, steering wheel free (not locked) - filled the barrel with silicon spray whilst vigorously tapping with a hammer on the bottom, top and end of ignition barrel and shaking the wheel at the same time -then pop - she works - and works fine -really smooth -but leave it over night and problem is back - happened 4 days in a row now!
Once its working its fine -it only seems to "lock" when left overnight -when you turn the key back the black button that pops up (on top of ignition) feels like it si slightly sticky - but maybe i am being over sensitivie to this -have also sprayed alot of silicon down there!!
Am guessing i am up for a new ignition barrel but only other thing i could think of was perhaps filling the barrel with a thick marine grease?
pic below of ignition barrel -any ideas welcomed!!
cheers
Bill

Have you taken the barrel out and oiled it ? put the key in turn to acc . Where the word lock is look towards the colum and you see a small hole ,push the center and the lock comes out . get the black button working again, plenty oy lube. The locks do weare. Get a new lock from toyota as the aftermarket ones dont last.

I've had mine lock on me several times...... Might sound stupid but I simply turn the key around (over) and its unlocks every time !

Try it ..... You never know, could work for you!

I use the same technique on my commodore drivers door and my bike ignition. I dont know if I believe it or not,but it works:D

Hi guys
]thanks for the tips - i got my hands dirty, pulled out the barrell and stripped it down -i think over time the key has worn and the lock has not (except the steering lock lug) so i had to file down some of the key "pins" and file some of the barrell in order to get it working freely
I took photos of the whole process and will post a thread for what its worth on how to strip and repair the barrell -its not perfect but it works really well now and whats the worst that could have happened? - i destroy it and have to buy a new one (position i was in anyway!!)
thanks again
Bill
