Didn't Nissan just release a v8 TD?
these trucks excel in harsh conditions
Making stuff more complicated definitely makes reliability go down.

Among other things there is too much torque, making it too easy to spin the wheels on sharp rocks.
The alternator and AC compressor are low down and the extremely salty water ruins them.
The D4D common rail injection system is very sensitive to bad fuel or moisture.
Many mines in WA are also looking a cheaper vehicles to replace the current model 7* series.

Outside the mines, owners love them, cant beat them for towing.

Not in Australia ,its probably in the Nissan Titan which is a N American model only.
Nissan is facing ruin here because of its lack of a suitable diesel.
Its possible Mercedes will bring out a G wagon pick up to compete with the 7* series in oz

Most of the mines around here are underground and the LV's are low range only with some gears locked to limit speed .

I hope both Toyota and Nissan pick up their game in Au .

One mine in town here just paid $35,000 for a busted up old 79 ...

its not as much of a cost issue it's down time issue .

Yeah 3 month wait is ridiculous,
I hear it's like that just about everywhere that they cannot keep stock on them.
Heck you can't test drive a brand new one because they sell too quick

My brother works undergraound as a shift boss at Kalgoorlie ,so I get a fair bit of info off him.
They are also looking at using cheap chinese 4wds like Great Wall as throw away vehicles.
The prices they will pay for a landcruiser also increases the likelyhood of theft. At one time they were the 2nd most stolen vehicle in WA.
Police believe many were being stripped to supply parts to the mines as the recovery rate was almost zero.
I reckon I could sell mine for more than I paid for it after owning it for seven years.
I keep mine in the backyard at night with a locked gate and 2 commodores behind it

Its all about practability and reliability,no place for trailer queens in the outback.Although I do hope that door is bigger in real life.

What makes them more feasable than before is that the australian army has dumped Landrover after 60 years and switched to the Gwagon as its main light combat vehicle(although they still have 2000 7* series for various purposes such as peace keeping).
Im guessing the Landrover Defender price will plummet with the thousands of vehicles and parts they intend to auction off.
Most of the Defenders have the Isuzu 4 litre turbo diesel mild suspension lift and reinforced frame,so not a bad buy for the dedicated.

One of the local automotive T.V. programs mentioned the other day that Nissan is working with Cummings to produce an engine for the Titan in the U.S. market. If I remember correctly the tentative launch date was 2014.

That would be great,I wonder if they would have to widen the chassis rails like they did with the V8 diesels in the 7* series?

People get those scoop stickers made up by a sticker company. I get my colour coded arb bar installed in a couple of days and an arb snorkel is on the way.
