Unhappy BJ70s with A/C

Did any particular year/model come with it?

None of the Canadian BJ70s as far as I know...unless they've been retrofitted in afterwards by the owner. The Canadian BJ70s were fairly basic models.

Mine seems very basic, no aluminum wheels, no A/C. They are all just built to be simple and tough. Well I guess all the old Cruiser are!

Brett added ac to his 24v.. I was contemplating adding ac but finding a 12v 70 evap case might be harder than the 24v and I moved to a nicer climate.

Wesintl...if I didn't have AC you know what I would do with all that extra room in front of the rad...Intercooler, BABY!!! Having said that...mine came with AC and I do like it, and don't want to get rid of it...yet.

I think a turbo and intercooler would be a more worthy project for your 70 than AC...probably end up being easier in terms of hunting down components and fitment.

curious, i do not understand AC at all so why would the evapoator case have to be 12V, i thought that just the pump had to be 12V??

Plus I think my top speed out here with an ac unit would be 45 mph. I don't need a/c when it's june and snowing I'm on the turbo.. I just need gainful employment and motivation. Here is a couple pics of friday evening run.

Thanks for the replies, I forgot to add that it had to be Canadian, since I want to bring it to the US, particularly Florida, and having here an A/C is as important as having an engine…

I could easily find 12V A/C parts from FJ70s or FZJ70s from Venezuela since they’ve been selling them (with A/C) since the 80’s and you can still buy one out of the showroom. But I don’t know if the compressor would fit a 3B engine. I guess the evaporator and condenser, etc. would. But I’m not sure if I want to get into that kind of trouble.

Really the main thing you need is an evap case that fit's (specific) to 70's. The rest I think you could scrounge (like compressor, dryer, etc. ) from a 60.. That was my plan anyway. I'll see if I can scan in the parts list Brett sent me. I don't think he'll mind?

Keep mind you also need the AC hard lines with the correct ends. Some of the lines will have to be custom made if you are transplanting the AC across models or across 70 series generation (pre 90 and post 90). Not hard to do at an AC shop but sure is a pain finding all the correct ends, etc. If you have access to So. American parts, try to get the entire system, not just an evap case and condensor.

Oh yeah, get the control panel and wire harness too.

Just saw this post so I'm jumping in late. Yes, I added AC to my CDN spec 24v BJ70. Mine was done using all new, correct factory parts that were scrounged from Japan, Oz and the rest were US parts. You will for sure need a 70 series evap case. These are getting harder to find for a LHD and they are spendy little buggers. The other hard part to find is the proper 3B bracket for the compressor...for this I found one from a CDN spec BJ60 as there were a few 3B 60's that came to CDN w/ AC. The next tricky part to find is the idle up switch (24v)...according to Jeff Bryant (who found most of these parts for me), he is trying to get one of these for another guy in Hawaii and can't find one.

The rest of the stuff (Recv/Dryer, hard lines, soft lines, grommets, wiring harnesses) should still be accessable from OZ or US. For a compressor, we used a factory rebuild from a mid 80's 4-runner. Wes, if you have the parts list scanned, feel free to post.

The real expert on this is Jeff Bryant. He has done three 70 series AC jobs now and anyone who knows Jeff knows how anal he is about using factory Toyota parts....his work on conversions is second to none. My AC works perfect and you cannot tell that is was not fitted from the factory

We got the evap from dave steadman in japan...brand new. It took a while to locate one IIRC. I think it was $750 USD back when the dollar was strong.

For what it's worth, I'd be willing to part with (sell or trade) my 24 volt RHD A/C system in it's entirety. I never use it, and that's going back about 6 vehicles now.

My "wanted" list includes a snorkel, lift leaf springs and a turbo, pretty much in that order.

That was back when the yen was about 130 to the $. Today it is 109. Also in the four years since I sent that the prices here have gone up. Last one I bought was well above $800 US. And they are big suckers so unless I happen to have stuff going out to your area the cost of postage is going to hurt.

The bit under the dash. The part infront of the rad is ambidextrious so no worries there. G&S should have a few of them on hand.

A little off topic ,but on that parts and price list shown by Wesintl it shows a sum for GST $34.99 AUD paid to the aust tax office.
My limited knowledge of tax law says international customers shouldnt have to pay that amount.
I know of someone else on this board that had the GST deducted from the total when they bought cruiser parts from aust.
Note that $77 USD tax was also paid to the US taxman
I believe the free trade deal we have with the USA eliminates the need to pay a tax in each country

GST in Australia

GST is only payable on goods/services bought and used in Australia. Nobody else in the world has to pay it for stuff they buy from Australia. Although sometimes a price quoted doesn't include GST, and if you are buying locally (and not a tradie) you have to add 10%
