BJ74 Roof Removal
I was asked what is involved in removing the roof?
Do the uppers on the back doors come off? Are there soft tops for these vehicles? Lots of trim pieces. You have to remove the interior panels to get at the bolts. Don't forget the bolts under the FRP badge. The doors are solid but can be replaced with soft top half doors (almost unobtainium) or soon Fibreglass replicas. There is a factory soft top for the mid wheel base. Cost will be high. Crushers makes a bikini.

My Jap manual shows that the window section of the rear doors can be detached be unscrewing. However, I had a look and cannot see that this can be done as the doors appear to be in one piece.

That's because JDM 73's and 74's were mostly setup NOT to have the FRP tops removed. They don't have the windshield rests, the "wrists" for the wipers, the modified front and back doors that make the top halves removeable, etc. Even though you can take the top off, you don't have what it really takes to go topless. If you were to take a close look at Moose's you'd see the difference.

Also worth looking at is the door posts ont he 70's. If you scrape the paint off you will find that the upper section is brazed onto the lower part. With moderate skill you could turn a set of used doors into half doors.
The soft top canvas and frame as well as the doors are available from Toyota as new parts, for now. |

I'm not sure if it helps, but my soft top doors come apart fairly easily with 2-3 bolts per door, accessed through rubber plugs in the door panels. It takes about 10 minutes to take off the rear door 1/2 and side doors. Another 10 minutes and the soft-top frame is gone.

Europe got a good number of these take-apart top 73/74's. You can tell by the windshield has the crease at the bottom where it folds and there are a couple of rubber(?) bumpers on the hood for the windshield to rest on.

Hmm. For some reason I can't upload the "new" picture so will have to do with a used German one.

soft top
I got got a new aftermarket soft top from germany that came with the frame and hardware. I bought another set of doors and cut the windows off. All and done said it cost about $3000. I can't say that I enjoyed the german instructions. This is a pretty good option.

I bought a sof top from www.cabrio.de, cabrio.de gelaendewagen It fit's perfect and are not making much noize in high speed. Some of the homemade soft tops are to thin and do not have noize-reducing area. The assembly are good quality. My LJ 73 have removabe windows front (side) and back. The price is € 1400
