bye bye back seat
I've been wanting to get this happening for a long time. Unfortunately, about the only thing I can build is a turd, so recently I got a buddy to build me a drawer set up for the back of my 70.
Here's the main box. Note the compartments at the front for a 10" sub and 2 6" woofers... __________________ norm '85 BJ70 - old yard decoration '89 BJ74 - newer yard decoration |

First coat of marine enamel on.
When I get home in a couple of weeks I'll post the final product. Look for a CO2 bottle mount, hi-lift mount, and lots of flush mount tie-downs in the finished product... __________________ norm '85 BJ70 - old yard decoration '89 BJ74 - newer yard decoration |

Nicely done, Norm! Seal up that sub enclosure really well. Are you going ported or sealed? Have a safe trip. Post up some nice foreign Cruiser pics when you get back.

BTW a while back Sport Trucks quoted me on essentially the same, but metal.
I think it was $350 for the 7" and $430 for the 12" (inside height). Have been holding back since that would put the pooch WAY HIGH and in my rear view sight line. __________________ Traci & Rojo |

Cool, I gotta make one of those too, I was thinking of aluminum, but that would cost a heck of a lot more.. How heavy is that?

Stone: No porting in the sub box. It's reasonably well sealed, as is the rest of the box - liberal amounts of construction glue and about 200 wood screws...Maybe a bead of silicone on the inside of the sub enclosure for good measure?
Got any recommendations for a good 10" sub? BB - The prices on those metal boxes sound awfully good - I have over $350 in materials alone in this...and about 25 hours of labour. Derek - It's not too heavy, though we've only dealt with it in 2 pieces (top and main box). One person can handle the main box assembly easily. __________________ norm '85 BJ70 - old yard decoration '89 BJ74 - newer yard decoration |

Oh yeah, a 10" sub in a sealed box usually requires about 0.6 cu.ft. volume. In a ported box you will need about 1.0 cu.ft. Don't use the sub in a box that is too small or too big, you won't get the best performance, and my not be happy. Just my 2 cents

Looks good , Norm:
I'd devide the space up and add a port tube to the woofer. There's lots of good calculators like this http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/boxcalcs.asp#por on the net that'll help you make that box sound really good. If you haven't bought that Powertank yet you should spend the money on River Shiver and come and win one in our raffle. cool, thanks for the sub info. That front compartment is seperated in three (you can just see it in the second pic), I'll figure the dimensions of the sub compartment (in the middle) and go from there.
I already bought the tank and regulator (hey, needed it to be able to figure where to mount it - right?;-). I'd love to be at RS but I'll be on a friggin plane to Australia instead. Can I still buy a raffle ticket ? ;-) __________________ norm '85 BJ70 - old yard decoration '89 BJ74 - newer yard decoration |

You can't really generalize how much enclosure volume subs need...different brands require different volumes. A typical Pioneer 10" sub requires 0.6 cubic feet of volume in a bandpass box, and between 1.0 and 1.2 cubic feet in a sealed enclosure. So you've gotta make it for whatever sub you end up with to maximize the sound. A bead of silicone along the seams on the inside of the box would be great.
Yes, Rockford Fosgate makes some pretty nice subs...they have several lines from cheaper to competition quality. The Punch seems to be a fairly decent buy...I ran two of those in my Corolla in high school, and they thumped real hard (800W RMS going through them from my amp). I then "upgraded" to a 15" MTX running 1000W through with an Epicenter, and that REALLY thumped. People could hear it coming well over a block away. Probably explains something about my hearing loss.I have a tame system in my BJ74 right now...just something to give me the full range of sound to my music. I have an Alpine Flex5 amp and a Phoenix Gold 10" sub in a sealed box. Not really pleased with the Phoenix Gold sub, so I'll probably end up replacing it with something else. I want my old JL Audio sub back from my brother...but I don't think he'll give it up.

Good thing I kept all my reno tools, out comes the Delta Uni saw(Norm Abrams of this old houses shop saw).
Biscuit jointer, I like the screws but prefer biscuits for strength. oops from Sport Trucks it was more like $430 for the 7" and $550 for the 12" (inside height)...
BTW tuffy prices are US$423 (item 58) and $453 (item 63) ...and they fit '40s http://www.tuffyproducts.com/trunk/trunk.html __________________ Traci & Rojo |

I can't believe it took 2.5 months to get back to this project...
anyway, it's in. Just have a few final things to finish up - a few more tie downs, the mounts for the hi-lift and the hold downs for the CO2 bottle, but this is basically it. __________________ norm '85 BJ70 - old yard decoration '89 BJ74 - newer yard decoration |

Hi Norm...can't see the last few pics for some reason.
By the way, don't you think that a lot of people would be interested in your project in the International Tech Forum? That's where most of the 70 series owners hang out. Let me know if you want me to move it. Cheers, Stone Aahh...finally loaded up for me. Looks good. You going to lay carpet on it at all? __________________ Stone's Land Cruiser & Flyfishing Pics Flyfishing British Columbia: www.flyfishbc.com bcfishingreports.com |
