Question Aftermarket exhaust for 1KZ powered SWB 70

folks its time for me to ditch the exhaust system on my 70 and get a new system in..... it is a kzj71 with a 3.0L turbo diesel under the hood.....

the previous owner being a total dweeb had installed a 1 3/8 inch diameter exhaust system....

i know for a fact that the 1KZ being a turbo would fare much better with a larger diameter exhaust.....

now time for advice from all you fellow mudders....

What diameter exhaust do you recommend?

Do i have to have a silencer in the system?? (i know for a fact that turbo vehicles and back-pressure are not in the same boat, the manifold provides all the back-pressure needed)

The vehicle is my daily use ride and i don not want the fuel economy to suffer (diesel is a painful $1.76 per liter here in Fiji)

also i don't want a really noisy rig as it would attract the licensing authority (who do not have the ability to explain the difference between a diesel and petrol engine )

So all you knowledgeable mud slinging folks, plizzz help out a fellow mudder in need of your advice......

that 1 3/8 would be like farting through a straw

Not to sure for the if the motors are simular but a mate had a turbo hilux and put a 2.5" exhaust on it with no mufflers great power increase from the std system and std sh1t mufflers ..and the turbo whistle was awsum but..... the noise was really noisy and anoying after a while...so id prob go a 2.5 with high flow turbo muffler
Yet mates with turbo 6cyl cruisers with 3" and no mlufflers dont sound anywere as loud as the turbo 4 cyl with 2.5" beside the whistle

hope this helps mate

i would go a 2.5inch exhaust too. The longer the exhaust the quieter it gets too. So if its a really short exhaust (as in on a shorty without too many bends) then its probably best to put a muffler on it. My 3inch exhaust just about doubles its volume when unbolted in half.

guess then 2.5inch it will be....... just a question though: will this have any adverse effect on the fuel economy??? i would run a 2.5 with a couple of free flow resonators......

plus a snorkel is on the way... managed to get a 2nd hand one for $200, new here is around $900.....

Hey Krishanprasad. Mine is a 78 Lwb. I run 2.5 inch on the 2.4L. It jets out the side and isn't to noisy. It has a 18 inch Dyana max resonator. The 2.5 inch exhaust will flow way better with better fuel economy.
Remember what goes in must come out or power and economy will suffer.

thanks mate.... its just that the muffler shop guys were giving me a scare by saying that the LC would be more expensive to run and the back-pressure crap.....

Nah what i have heard the less restrictions on the diesels the better. Intake and exhaust should see marginally better economy

Nice! I suggest stock OEM exhaust. Fits perfectly, engineered for your motor and will outlast anything aftermarket.

Nice as that sounds, not at all practical for me as the dealer have quoted me $2500 for the complete OEM system to be brought in upon request via air freight....

I really do not want to spend that much on OEM whilst i can get hopefully a much better custom made system for around 300bucks....

the dealers are a rip off.........

I would have to disagree with that some of the worst exhausts I have ever seen have been on 70series landcruisers. They are the cheapest nastiest part of the whole truck

Wow. And I thought we had it bad in Alaska. Here, the dealer is expensive enough but does not make a customer pay extra shipping unless he/she wants expedited service. For instance, I just ordered an OEM muffler and tailpipe for my pickup for under $200. You might want to call a Toyota customer care center somewhere to check up on this practice.

AS MUCH AS I WOULD LOVE TO DO THIS........but the fact remains that being on a small island nation (did i mention absolutely beautiful), even Toyota pays no attention....... i always find it cheaper to get stuff off e-bay and have it shipped over....

plus i always like to stand apart from the crowd so a 2.5inch without any obstructions will give me all the rumble i need..... maybe just a free-flow resonator or 2 would keep the rumble just within the limits so that i don't get a freaginn defect notice
