5th Gear problems H55F popping out
Hi All,
Recently bought a BJ74 with a H55F, gearbox works well but on overrun in 5th it pops out of gear. When under load its holds 5th fine, but if you back right off completely it pops about halfway out of gear and free revs.
Any ideas what the problem could be? Has done about 310,000km It kinda feels like the gear doesnt fully engage when put into 5th, like the gear stick doesnt move as far as my FJ73.
Could it be a shifter problem? Or should I pull the box and have it rebuilt?

It could be worn out shift forks and a bad detente spring. Not sure if you can get the top cover off with the trans in place though.

My H55F did exactly the same - at about 110 000miles. Cost me a full overhaul - all bearings and seals replaced. An old LC hand told me years later that replacing the pilot bearing - needle rollers - would give you another 10000 miles before needing more work...

Usually there is too much end play on the mainshaft, mostly countershaft because of wornout bearings.

I heard H55F's are prone to this, I read somewhere that you can heat the fork and bend slightly inward or somnething to that effect and it would stop that from happening?

that advice came from me years ago, fromt he factory the fork does nto fully engage the tiny teeth area of the 5th gear.
you will not need a full overhaul. contact Dan at 4 wheel and he can sell you a kit to fix this problem.
cheers
