Offroad trip - On water

I went off road end off the month - took the STOCK LJ77 and loaded it up with fishing kit and went of in search of the famous Malaysian SnakeHEAD or TOman with a customer and a couple of friends.

4 day trip
Day 1-2 on Besia which is the next lake/dam down from the polular Tasik Temenggor
this is pics from Day 3-4 on a lake known as Air Ganda which is actually the name of the village in Perak in West Malaysia and the is 3rd lake on the river or the next lake down from Bersia. I will post pics of this one later on my blog as it is not as pretty as Air Ganda.

FOr those of you who have never caught a TOman they are a dirrty crafty fighting fish - breaking 20-30lb braid like grass - biting through 40lb titanium wire trace - busting reels and rods - straightening and crushing treble hooks in the brief 2-3 minute fight they will give you. anything over 3kg is going to fight howver the bigger ones 6kg+ can be real monsters - I have seen 10kg ones they are huge and the official record is 17kg and some have been pulled in over 25kg.

They are also an air breather and get over 25% of their air like we do.

So here it is - Air Ganda is a man made lake just to make it more interestingit has stumps still in it :(

More pics from day 3-4 of the trip - I will post the Bersia ones later.

the taxi stock LJ77 3L engine and it chalked 350,000k's at the end of the trip

This is Air Ganda scenic and full of Toman.

Early morning fisherman in his sampan

early morning flat water and the wonderful sight of a full dam

Baby TOman hooked up from a school of fries. bABy tomans school up and live in the mums mouth until they are bigger then they emerge and she is ever close - usually 1-2 meters away swimming in circles ready to whack any ambushing seberau chasing her babies. Dad also hangs around usually 5-10meters away also swimming in circles. Spot the fries and put a lure into them and the mum will hopefull go for it and its violent they always ambush from below. a 5KG toman will pull you off the boat of you are not ready for the violent strike. Sometimes dad will ambush first but Mum is usually the biggest of the two.

The sequence of a baby Toman school rising

No 4. and some of them are on their way back down.

Sunset and the boatman

Day 4 misty morning and we are hunting seberau first before finding toman.

Even more picturesque cove

Ah my toman finally all 3.5kg of angry mum

The customer was happy he caught 3 the first day and 7 the next then they ran out of live bait.

Me keeping the mum at arms bay - I also use the same tools on my x-wife

A school of fries playing

Shot this eagle from the boat at 30kph and manual focus took me about 30 shots but I got 3-4 good ones

The awesome eagle (800mm lens and manual focus)

Very cool story and pictures! That fish is similar to the Northern Snakehead, and invasive species that someone released into the Potomic river in the USA and might be making its way to Canada. People would keep them in fish tanks and when they got too big they release them into the water here - a very bad thing.

Very cool though please post more adventures in the future.

I think you will find its almost the same fish - Malaysian TOman and Northern Snakehead are very close. Thailand and a few other places also have them.

The Toman will win its a serious fish.

We have big South america Aparima in a lake here and one apparently killed two people a while ago - they believe the mum knocked the ranger of the boat and he drowned. SOmeone retrieveing his body also drowned.

We also have Peacock Bass from Amazon :( . They are good fun to catch.

I found this clip on youtube for those wondering what a big toman looks like this one appears to be over 7kg. No wonder his hand hurt he was putting his thumb on the drag to stop it spooling out as the Toman run in violent jerking surges .

YouTube - 12kgs Gaint Snakehead "TOMAN"

im going back here in end september early october for another round of battlling the Snakeheads.

Great trip bro...

I'm from M'sia too... have not been to both Bersia and Air Ganda... if I had to choose 1 due to time constraints which would you choose? Thanks

Air Ganda sport its bigger and a lot more places to fish in. Bersia is basically a dammed river and is still very narrow but Air Ganda is rather large in fact I have been told I cannot kayak down it it in a day. So there is my challenge. which we are planning for January (more later) Also the fisherman are catch and release some of hem refer to the TOman as their babies hey are passionette about keeping their livlihood maintained so catch and release is veryt encournaged. However they all love the sounds of a TOman crashing a lure.

Wayne to answer your question catch and release is catching on here. Toman like mackeral is best grilled or fried it is almost tasteless. Best place for them is in the water terrorising fishing rods and reels.
