Question HZJ 75 brakes sticking

Hi everyone, on the Lodge here in Zambia we have a HZJ 75 with the 1HZ (1HZ stands for 1 Happy Zambian by the way ) annnd the front brakes keep sticking on.

The pedal is very hard and has very little travel, the top 2" or so locks the brakes. The brakes stick whether you use them or they slowly brake harder and harder as you drive.

To 'solve' it so far we have been cracking the bleed nipple on the caliper, this releases the pressure and you can drive on a bit more.

I've cleaned the caliper pistons, all fine, measured the brake booser pushrod clearance, checked the check valve and cleaned the master cylinder ports. I've tried pumping the pedal with the engine off to exhaust the vacuum, then standing on the pedal and starting the engine to check the booster is working....the pedal does drop but slowly, there's no obvious 'drop'.

Anything else you suggest I check??

I think I'm going to blow the brake lines through with the compressor next to make sure they're not blocked but apart from that I'm running short on ideas!!

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks

Joe

I know it sounds silly ,but someone once had this problem on their 60 series and I think they had the bleed nipple and pressure line line plugged in ass about after a strip down.(I dont how you could do it actually)

You should be getting an obvious pedal drop when you start the engine. Its one of the checks outlined in the manual.
Must be fun when you have two landcruisers misbehaving

Causing the brakes to stick? Interesting, if so let me know as I have some new boosters if you need one.

Well I blew through the brake lines and it's made it a bit better. VERY lightly sticking now and much less often.....

Any way of checking the booster? It's getting vacuum from the pump..

Why would the booster casue the brakes to stick? Not returning to the 'zero' position or something....I can understand it causing the hard pedal but not the sticking brakes.

Hi Joe. Draging brakes, I look after 12 hzj 75. First check the free play in the peddlr under the dash, the stopper, back it off. 2 Take the master cylnner off and push the piston in and see it returns out again, if not replace or rebuildit. 3 check the hight of the push rod on the boster and the master cyldner and make sure the rod is not holding the piston in a bit as that wont let the brakes off.. As you drive it the brakes get tighter, the fluid is not returing to the master cyldner. Ian.

I agree with the master. I had exactly that on the HJ60, and it turned out to be a master that did not return the pushrod well.
certainly not the booster.
cheers,
Jan
