wow a cup holder , unstoppable plastic dash squeaks and air bags to unexpectantly slap the hell out of you while you offroad....cool

Call me a pursit but I dont like it, the engine is cool though !

That is the same engine from the Tacoma, 4Runner and FJ Cruiser here in Canada and USA, Really nice engine, plenty of power, crappy mileage, hope they don't stick the 6 speed manual tranny from Tacomas in it though.

edit,

Even with those goofy stickers on the side, I would trade my Tacoma for that truck in an instant. :P

Nothing if its a genuine 6 speed.
If its just a 5 sp with an extra gear in the middle with no difference to the overall spread of ratios, then Ill take the 5 sp.
Ask a Navarra owner

We get that engine (1GR-FE) in the Hilux, Fortuner (sort of bargain basement 4-Runner) and the 120 Series Prado. It is known as a very smooth, durable and relatively economic motor.

The 1GR-FE V6 does produce higher maximum power than the 1FZ-FE (4.5 inline six), but not greater maximum torque. The 1FZ-FE actually has significantly more torque at low engine speeds than the 1GR-FE. I would reckon that the 4.5 would be the better engine for offroad use.

So would the 6th gear be good to drop the hiway revs and better fuel??

1GR-FE
does this mean they will be called a GRJ-79 series for the utes

in Arab Gulf market specs (what we have in Jordan)
79 series:
1FZ-FE has H150F (real heavy duty trans)
1HZ has R151F ( not so heavy duty trans)

A guy from a forum in South Africa got this information from his dealer about a month ago:

"Glen we have been given information from Toyota last week about the new Troopy. I can tell you that the technical change will start in July 2009 for cars arriving the following month.

The expected changes to the Troop Carrier Workmate Ian quoted for you are as follows:

Driver and front passenger airbag
Airbag warning lamp & driver’s seatbelt warning lamp
Protruding front bumper (to allow for airbag sensors)
200mm wide 2DIN audio unit
Bluetooth handsfree
USB & 3.5mm audio input jack
Telescopic steering column adjustment
4 spoke steering wheel (from the current 200 Series GXL)
Multi-function clock
Cup/bottle holder below dash
Meter illumination controls
New dash and combination meter design and layout
Revised interior pillar and header garnish
V8 decal replaced with chrome V8 badge
Visible exterior A pillar garnish/reinforcement"

I still like the classic dashboard better, I wouldn't trade the good old metal glove box for anything! , but it doesn't look bad either. As for the engine, we'll have to wait and see if the 1GR can live up to the 1FZ-FE's legendary track record.

Very cool, so air bags, and an engine already spec'd for north america - hmm, rules out the diesel for now but looks good to bring in. If toyota north america figured it had the market for a cruiser they will bring them in - lets see what happens.

not trying to but in, but I have a little experience with both of these engines. I would have to say I am against any moderinization of the chassis.
The 1FZ is build like a tractor engine, where as the 1GR is defintally a car/light duty engine. I took a 1FZ apart last winter and I was absolutly blown away. I happan to work at detroit diesel and its the first engine i have seen in a car that was build like a heavy duty diesel engine.
I think the 1GR looks a little to cheapened up, designed for compactness and less weight.

From my offroading experneces with both FZJ80 and FJ cruiser I think we have a classic case of something looking better on paper than it really is. Yes the V6 has more peak H.P./torque, but you can beat the living shit out of the 1FZ all day and not have any problems.

The oil filter is easier to get at on the 1GR.
Just my 2 cents, what do you guys think?

I want an FZJ80 with minimal mall cruiser stuff, and F+R diff locks. Can trade jeep+cash, or just cash. Prefer OBD1.
Please i despertly need to get my 1FZ fix.
Never mind, I got an RX7 to play with this summer.

im not really sure if toyota will bring this truck in US!?, but from my point of view if they did, then American Trucks will be effected with that. people will buy this truck over the other larger overheating trucks

lets wait and see

Hi All:

Keeping my fingers crossed Louis!

Although I'm not fond of the modernizing of the vehicle if that is what is neccesary to get one that is importable to the USA, well that is what is we'll have to deal with.

The 4500 V-8 DID would be a much better powerplant though!

Regards,

Alan

I highly doubt they would bring it in- it would never sell unless it were priced lot lower than what they normally sell for. North Americans generally like to get the biggest item bang for their buck ie. if they can pay 55k for a loaded piece of shit ford pickup as opposed to a smaller landcruiser pickup that will require little to no work for its entire life - they will go for the bigger louder piece of shit.

If North Americans had to drive 1000kms between watering holes things would be alot different here.

Though I too doubt Toyota would bring it to Canada, I do know there is a market here for them, I know lots of people in the forest industry that hate their fullsize trucks, but unless Toyota spends a lot of money promoting these trucks here I doubt they would sell... especially with the current discounts/incentives on domestic fullsize trucks they would be a hard sell. I'd say Toyota wouldn't want 3 trucks in there lineup but just thinking now they have what 6 -7 SUV's? More including Lexus's lol. Ah well what can you do...

So they have finally put the last nail in the coffin for the 7* series reputation as a heavy duty work vehicle.
IMO they didnt really need the V8,the 1HD FTE was plenty of power for these, but it was the emissions laws that forced it in the end.

Just a note about the D4D range of diesels of which the V8 is part of.
When an injector fails they cost $700+ each and you have to go to the dealer to have it programmed.
Not going to be much help when your 500 miles east of Uluru
