Hello,
Agreed. A passenger airbag is another device likely to malfunction in the bush. It is also one of those devices intended to compensate for the driver's stupidity.
As a survivor of a car crash riding shotgun when the airbag activated, I can tell it adds little to the passenger's safety. It was the seat belt that prevented me from flying away; the airbag added a few nasty bruises and trauma, as it pressed me against the seat. It crushed my left arm as well, and I was lucky it was badly beaten but not broken. It hurt like hell, however.
The bag did protect the driver, preventing him from crashing the dash and sustaining injuries. It was a frontal collision and he got away unscathed while I ended up in the ER.
There is no safety system against a careless driver. Yes, an airbag will prevent the driver from injuries or death, provided it is used as a complement to seat belts and properly placed headrests. About the passenger I am not so sure.
Anyway, I would still buy one of those new Cruisers.
Sorry for the rant.
