Overheat Issues, your thoughts welcom :)

Hi,

I recently got a bj74 and am traveling across Canada with it. Day 1 (yesterday) the truck showed overheating signs. Was reading very high. I stopped and cooled it down a few times and added more water.

Got a new rad cap today and pulled the thermostat to test. Opened just before water boil. Seems to fuction ok. The water pump was done 2 years ago, should be good.

I just reinstalled the filler tower without the thermostat in it. Hopefully it will hold temp. If not does anyone know where I can get a water pump in Calgary Alberta for a 13bt? Heh , rather quickly even

Otherwise I still love the truck if you can believe it hahahaha

Looks like a small rock under the cap bled off pressure on the hiway. I changed the cap and burped it , pulled out the t-stat for now as well. Seems to hold about 5mm above cold on gauge.

The water pump for the 13B-T and the 3B are the same based on vintage (04161-56080 is the correct Toyota part number). You can get them at any Toyota dealership, they were about $140 last time I bought one.

Barring that you can get one from 4 Wheel Auto in Edmonton. They will drop it on a Grayhound and you'll have it the next day.

Craig.

If the water pump is 2 years old ,it wouldnt need doing again for 10 years .
A lot of engines stay cooler with a t/stat.

I would be looking at a having radiator flushed and the cores rodded.

Is it making black smoke or has the fuel been turned up. These things will make them run hotter.
Does it get pressure in the radiator?

Sometimes also mate, depending on the terrain you cruise on but my old 75 rad was full of tall grass seeds from the PO and that was a issue which caused it to get hot and sometimes the bottom half of the rad fins fill up with mud that was another issue i had later i didnt have a air cond rad in front of the rad then, so when i put a/c in i replaced the half blocked s**ty rad and put fly wire over the grill
