Guage issues

A guy I am working with has the 74 as I do and his speedo did not work. After testing it with a drill and fooling around with the harness I got it working. What was weird was that it had a y adapter at the transfer case. I checked mine for one but I did not. Why would you need to drive two speedos? The other guage issue is the oil pressure. After grounding it out and cleaning the terminals it now somewhat works. We are assuming it still might be connection or sender issues. If there was a faulty oil pump, would it work or not work or could still kind of work?

Oil pumps usually go slowly,so the pressure would fall off.
You cant beat plugging in a mechanical gauge so you know whats happening
