I took the coils out of a higher mileage 80 series and lifted the truck about 3 inches.

Only thing that was needed was extended brake lines and diff breathers. Got a brake line kit from Slee offroad for their 4-6 inch lift.

Doesn't seem to be enough to fully articulate the 35" mud terrains.

I'll post up pics once the 3.5" spacers and the extended travel shocks are installed.

Cheapest lift I figure being that the coils were free.

Biggest thing I noticed is a way smoother ride right away and a bit of torque activated suspension.

I'll be interested to see this (pics please) I thought this would cause some difficulties because of the larger diameter of the 80s coils. Also what shocks are you using?

all thats done so far is the rear coils, stock shocks, as these Lj-78 have a huge amount of sag It doesn't seem necessary to change them right now.

Plan is once I get the spacers built and installed I'll go with the Rancho wireless adjust and the proper extended length.

I'll post up when its all done, promise it won't be much longer.

Hey Pinkfloydssotm. Only the front coils of an 80 series fits the rear of the LJ78. This should gain a stiffer ride in the rear and about 2.5-3 inch lift if the coils are in good shape. So all the people that complain about the rear of their 78 sagging they can order on ebay front coil spacers to give the rear a lift back up. The rear 80 series coils will not fit the 78 at all.

Do you have any pics of this? What did you use to make the spacers and how big are they?

This is a Toyota Surf (4runner) with a 78 series suspension on the front. It has 80 series 5.5inch coils all the way around and doesn't ride stiff. It flexes great off road. The coils fit fine in the 78 series front coil buckets but the top ones were modified. A piece of thin steel was welded around the outside of the coil bucket to keep them from popping out when flexed. In the rear the 80 series coils fit fine on the Surf but coil bucket mods would be needed for a Prado.

Hey Fellas, ok so I am just a bit onfused- 80 series FRONT coils will fit in the rear of my lj78 (that part I get...) But I need a spacer from ebay first? Will this work in the front and back to level everything back out? Is there anything else I need to do to make this all work?

This Surf with the Prado front suspension w/coil buckets uses the front 80 series coils in the front with a slight mod to the buckets to keep the coils from popping out.

Rear 80 coils will fit into the rear of a surf but not a Prado without mods.

Pradocruzer and RHD are talking about using front 80 coils in the rear of a Prado.

Ah right now I'm running the rear 80 series in the rear and am about to put the front 80 in the front of my LJ78.

It seems a bit dodgy in the rear but my spacers should take care of any spring wanting to side slip out of the cruiser.

ok... i have also fitted in 80series springs in the rear of my kzj71 but before getting springs for the front, i just want to make sure the 80series springs fit in up front...... please let me know once u r done...

It does fit on directly, only looks thicker but there is a lot of space for it to go in and work..... have it on my 71....

Nicely done!!! How did you get the 80 coils to stay nicely seated?

cut the front ones so that they would fit in the bottoms of the spring perch. Made the spacers so that they would fit over the old lip rings at the tops. Springs are tight in the spacers, might tack the spacers in place if that ever becomes an issue of slippage
