My Malaysian LJ70 - RED
Always good to see trucks from around the world being modified to suit their environment so its Time to show my Malaysian jungle hack which Started life as a straight RJ73 22R I will show 3 years of playing in one posting. Its affectionately know as RED or little RED. SInce our jungle is "unique" we only run small trucks due to the mud and the log bridges - 80's and 100's and 205's etc are just too heavy and big oh year too expensive to buy anyway at over $150,000USD for a new twin turbo V8 diesel and close to $100,000USD for a new TROOPY Pickup :( .
Modifcations
Diesel axles fitted with Discs on rear
Conversion to 13B-T followed after 12 months with 24V electrics and installation of 80 series PTO/Electric
WInch with AIR freespool/engage for the PTO - Electric AIr Engage to be done soon.
All other items in car converted to 24volts for lights and 24v/12v Relays installed to convert windows and
spotlights. 24V wipers etc installed.
2 1/2" Exhaust folwing original path.
12V COmpressor rewound to 24V.
35" SImex XT's running truck tubes on stock rims
Electric Rear LOcker converted to AIR done at same time as 13B-T conversion.
Auto gearbox installed with 13B-T 12 months later its replaced by H55F gearbox and light clutch pedal
3" Spring lift with spacers and steering castor kit done
Extended Rear Link bar done
Supra Master cylinder and booster fitted and extra vaccum tank to cure problem with big wheels
Internals
Milford Cargo Barrier installed
Soundproofed floor and doors soon to do roof as the boot marks from the 2007 tip over etc have rotted the
roof.
Rear cargo rack made up.
Plywood and sponge floor in rear
1 Alloy window in rear 1 more to be made as I keep smashing them
All panels inside changed or to be changed to alloy panels and extra soundprofing added to stop resonating
Fire extinguisher
Snorkle
Sidesteps
Ractive front Seats
Diff breathers to engine compartment
Breathers for the gearbox and xfer case.
Buzzer for PTO engage.
Recent Rebuild of 13B-T
as the engine had done over 1M k's
When removing the CAM it broke in two it was that close to disaster
External wastegate installed and original internal wastegate removed tossed away and the hole welded up.
Front Mount INtercooler
Various things done with inlet manifold from a 14B.
Stainless steel piping to intercooler
Bigger batteries (90AMPS)
7M Turbo rebuilt and modified
All moving engine parts replaced
14B-T Rotary Fuel pump rebuilt and modified in Sabah along with Injectors and Turbo.
14B-T TIming gear installed and Sump
Modified airfilter made
Variable boost installed set and fixed to max 21 PSI
Apexi Boost Gauge and EGT
Oil scavenger installed to stop oil getting to intercooler
We pulled the old engine out in 58 minutes not bad for 2 IT geeks and installed the new engine in about 2 horus and then waited for the mekanik to complete the tuning bits over a couple of weeks.
To Do
Roll cage and 5 4 point harnesses to be installed
Engine Oil temp and OIl pressure gauges to be added.
Twin Rear Shocks and longer travel springs (anyone assist me here with what I can fit)
Offset wheels and Rim LOcks
ARB Front Locker
REDuce front bumper size and weight
REDuce Rear bumper size and weight
Add Rear XD9000 WInch or PTO winch.
3" Exhaust
How does it go?
Unbelievable idle along and floor it it takes off with a howl and growl.
2WD High range most places. if in trouble press the 4WD button more select Rear LOcker oh yeah and pres down the gas pedal and it usually just pulls.
Wheelspin 1st/2nd gear offroad high range with 650lb rice in the rear and fully loaded with 3 adults and
all the camping kit.
Idle along you would never know its evil - really is a wolf in sheeps clothing haha little RED riding hood.
COst - not telling but I blew my budget by $10KUSD haha.
This happened with 320kg (roughly 650lb) of rice in the rear (and all the camping kit ) on a recent charity trip I self recovered after attaching myself to a LC II . Yup the engine was stlll running and its worse than the picture shows. THis was at 700 meters up and to just below this point I had driven all the way in 2WD HI. It jumped out of 4LO due to a problem with the linkages which I must really now fix.
video of the rescue after I pulled the front down on ututbe at this link bu the quality sux real bad.

Wow!!! I was already impressed with your troopy... Very cool vehicles!
Congrats Cicak. Interestingly here, where we also have our share of Rainforest there is absolutely zero off road scene - you cannot even buy MT tyres
The ONLY recreational 4x4 you ever see is the occasional overlander on the roads.

where are you located?
TROOPY is stock absoltuely apart from the 3B converted to 13B-T and the big sneakers and the modified 8274 winch. Soon to have lockers front and rear. We are also looking at installing a PTO front and rear and move the 8274 to the side to allow the PTO in the front also.

Hang on, it's a four door wagon, so not a troopy, which has only two doors.
And it isn't an LJ70, being a long wheelbase model with four doors. The LJ70 is a short wheelbase with two doors.
Is it an LJ78?

I think you are confused the RED truck is actualy at RJ70 or RJ73 but since it is a 95 model it is probably a RJ73 but now it does not matter its so hybrid and mongrel now.
The TROOPY is the YELLOW truck in my profile and is a BJ75 as it is a 1987 model from JAPAN which was 24V with 3B and 4 speed g/box which was converted poorly to 12V and the engine converted poorly to 13B-T before I restored it all to a reasonable state of running. I do not have a plate on it only the papers which I will check next week again. So now the YELLOW truck is not a LJ78 but it can only be a BJ75.
For the record I also own a LJ72 stock and a LJ70 which I collect next month from someone.

Hey Cicak,
It is nice to see another Malaysian cruiser head here. I am from KL too. I have a 80 here in US. I love the 70 series, my God brother has a Landcruiser ll with 3.0 1KZ-TE transplant, it is nice to drive. You might even know my God father or brother too, they used to be hardcore wheeler, their work shop is in cheras batu 11, right by the toll on the left side. I believe they still have a newer Hilux, a Rexton and a couple of Safari. He was known as "fei low". I have the same rear bumper carrier that I imported back to US for my 80 too.

Yep, sorry, I was confused about the reference to the Troopy, and thought it was reffering to the red 4 door wagon.
But, I am seeing pictures of a red 4 door wagon above. The RJ70 is a 2 door short wheelbase model, and the RJ73 a 2 door mid wheelbase model, so I still don't see how the red 4 door wagon in the photos above is an RJ70 or RJ73.
The 4 door wagons are 76 or 77 models, and some 78 models, such as the LJ78 and KZJ78 being 4 door wagons as well.
I still think that you have got it wrong, and that the red 4 door wagon above is an RJ77, or something like that.
These are some Mud threads about other member's RJ77's, which seem to be the same as your model...

Gidday ah the LC II with the common 1KZ conversion yup we are thinking of this of this for the 3L engine but I really like the 13B-T/14B-T engines as they do not have a ECU in them so they cannot be drowned in sungai's (rivers) as easy as a ECU unit rendering it immobile etc.
No I do not know them but if they have done the RFC they will certainly have seen both my wagons.
I Used to hang out at safari junction but of late its rawang. haha I can work on my own trucks there as the mekanikx assistannt as if I do it at home my nice neighbour calls the police but the police like me as I do charity trips and the RFC so in their eyes im the hero good guy hahaha.
There is now an outbreak of LC II's converted to 1JZ's causing tracks to be ripped up - these guys all dressed immaculate in the jungle just out for day drives and not camping :( . and the price of 2nd hand LC II's is going up - $10K in 2 months nothing under $30k now :( .

The red truck a 78 series light duty. A 70 is a SWB and the 73 is a MWB with an FRP roof.
Check the aluminium plate on the firewall.
Nice truck. I wish I had the energy to fit all those mods

Hi Cicak,
Agree with Simon that what you have is NOT a LJ70.
Anyway nice pics........ keep it coming
Good to see/hear at least 2 Malaysians in this post (yourself
and ranma21) that share and enjoy the same interest. As for me
am residing about 80km south of KL..... Seremban.
The following are little info I found over the 3 years while
playing with BJ40 before moving on to LJ70. If you could
locate the rig/ID plate on firewall and cross ref to this site,
http://www.off-road.com/tlc/faq/faq.txt
you should be able to correctly identify the LJ/FJ/RJ/BJ series.
The rig/ID plate contains lots of valuable info like, actual rig/
engine-gear box type/capacity/etceteras.
The one I have is,
LJ70-RV-KR

L : L series diesel engine (2L .... 2nd gen)
J : Japan
70 : 70series
R : Righ Hand Drive
V : Hard Top
K : 4 speed gearbox
R : standard model.
Below was take 2 weeks ago, testing both the front and rear
air lockers...
Next stop will likely be either in Konkoi, Telemong
or Talang rainforest pending number of vehicles from Buaya and/
or Lanun Darat 4x4 team.
Have fun viewing.
regards,
HelimanBD.

Ha thanks for that I will look when I am home tonite. Telemong - haha that could be too tough now for a FORD pickup seriously or any IFS pickup. My yellow truck had trouble there on 35"s and a XJ JEEP on 31's was left at the top of the track to the waterfall campsite as it had noend of trouble coming up for a recce trip (the one at the bottom of the hill). and another ISUZU pickup we pull 1/2 way up due to a lack of clearance - I Will post my last pics from there when I parked YELLOW in a ditch covered in BAMBOO ooooops - SOme say TElemong is HC already I say its just fun. You hang around with buaya Puchong boyz I was in Kg Rekom with them last weekend on a charity trip.
We will be trying to open more of TElemong in near future - e.g. past horseshoe camp on right .
Konkoi, or Talang rainforest no idea where they are tough or easy? Tough I like easy is for IFS pickups hahaha.
PM me or join ORS if you wanna meet up - I am j----bunny on Offroadershack.com the local Malaysian 4x4 forum.

The winch has to be done to enable self rescue from ditches etc and rescuing people with busted winches. I have a spare XD9000 which can be used in YELLOW as its the same footprint as the 8274 wihch is what it is for. However RED really neds something behind to help out people etc hahaha.
YUp been in the RFC 3 times - Media COnvoy manager 2004 - likes hearding CATS and CHICKENS all at once.
2007 the infamous wet one and was part of the 10 official trucks which managed to drive out just before it closed in and was then part of the RFC crew working with police , fire, army etc for the rescue operation of 88 vehicles and over 200 people. Then went back in and pulled a couple of vehicles out for people to ship back overseas 3 weeks after the event.
2008 Marshall setting up SS's drunk more than I worked too easy and only winched twice the whole trip.
2009 planning to go back as PRESS vehicle to take 3 foreign press people wherever they want in the RFC in a vehicle which I believe the PRESS need and not the crapped out vehicles currently allocated to PRESS. YELLOW will be in the hands of a mate and it will be the entertainment wagon - say no more until after the event - lets just say a giant portable stereo is being designed hahaha another 2 friends are also planning to take dedicated press also . SInce all our trucks are comp spec in terms of equipment and not body shape they are quite capable hahaha.
I will post what I have of RFC 2008 soon. They are also on www.Flickr.com under silvershutterbug2 or search for RFC

Hey too many toyz but nice list - did not tjhink anyone would want to see how a electric locker was converted to AIR - lokks a crap load better than the electrics I got sick of jacking it up on the side of the track and undoing the electric locker to unlock it and did that and the PTO at the same time. NExt is to put the ELECTRIC side of the PTO onto Pneumatic engage/disengage and put the camera back on the PTO so I can see them both engage/disengage and watch the cable as its spooling in. Lazy no smart yes and put the reversing camera back in operation also.
sure drop by any tieme in KL I buy you a beer. My engine is now SABAH spec after the SABAH tuning shop tuned the fuel pump and the injectors and the turbo.
I may do a video of the toy running at 0-full boost run soon

Hi Cicak,
here in Winnipeg,we have six months of cold winter, the city put lots of salt on the ground, mix with snow and they become a salty slush that will eat away a nice rustfree Landcruiser in a couple of years. That's why l have my HDJ81s as winter drivers and the the rare trucks only summer driven.
l was in Sabah 5 years ago and Kuching 2 years ago,l saw tons of engines, transmissions and axles and all kinds of used parts from Japan, sitting on workshops' shelves and floor, and way cheaper than here, like 13B-T 14B-T ,Hd-T engines, can you ship a few engines to me??HA ha.
if l can find a 13b-T,l wouldn't have to turbocharge so many 3B,today l am going to drill and tape a half inch hole on the block for the turbo oil return line, use to weld a bunk on the oilpan, but thia time l am going to try a hole on the bolck.
which shop in sabah do the injectionpump?next time l go there l will bring one back in my suitecase, haha.
Any pics of your converted e-locker?l am just about to wire my E-locker,wouild like to see how the air conversion is done, got to get my truck ready for a trip in june to North dakota in USA.
cheers
Simon

Hi Cicak/Malaysian Friends,
Telemong, last trip was in Sept'08. It rain heavy & hard the
night before. Had 33" Silverstone MT-E'treme (Centipedes) on
the LC-BJ40 and needed to winch the last 200m all the way...
NOT surprise now is HARDCORE.... definitely the XLTs/Storms/
pickups need winching from the bamboo garden onwards. The
only one that got out was FJ70 but with 1G /VOLVO axles/
lockers...... this is to Sg Dua falls & campsite.
The Telemong "horse-shoe" campsite, after crossing the stream
to Sg BOT is now hardcore (only for SWBs).
For Talang... now is super hardcore.... need to winch youself
down a (6-8)ft drop and up again a 10ft embankment from
Kuala Klawang towards Talang, Tanjong Ipoh..... only for SWBs
and solid axles.... friends attempted on XLTs only managed to
move 60m BUT stopped with broken tie rods.
For Konkoi, Light-Medium on dry days, hardcore to super hard
after rain. Last trip in March'09, resulted a 15hrs recovery (work
thru the night, 1500hrs till 0600hrs) for 3 km distance and only
5 vehicles. 2 pick-up with broken tie rods & crack front wheel
drive casings, LC2 with snap 10mm cable and broken PTO, D90 with damage fenders & rear lights, and BJ40 with snap multiple PTO pins (at least 6).... double snatch blocks being used...
Had pics vcompiles in ppt... PM me if interested.
regards,
HelimanBD.

Yea, I know they will be pissed off seeing your muddy 4x4 right next to their bimmer or benz huh!! I never wheel in Malaysia, just convoyed with RFC one year to their first obstacle then left.

You can always use a 1KZT to solve the ECU dilemma when it comes to sungai =) Yeah, I know people has been using 1JZ in their truck, fast and cheap transplant from Soarer. I prefer diesel than gasser when it comes to offroad and long haul expedition trip. Been trying to find a 1HD-FT for my 80, they wanted so much and hard to source in Malaysia. I am going to try probably in Japan and Australia next.
It has been a long time since they did RFC. If my memory serve me right, I think he used to be the mechanic for RFC and competitor himself when RFC just started more than 10 years ago. I remember he has a Range Rover back then, then Hilux Surf, a highly modified Suzuki that was in the press, and Safaris. They changed car like crazy, is hard for me to even keep up as I normally see them once a year.
I will love to buy a LC ll and wheel the hell out of it if I were to come home for good. Right here in the states, you can only get 40, 60, 80, 100 and 200 series LC and none of them comes in diesel.

I will ask my mekanic to get the details for me - address ok and h/p number? SInce he took the gear over as hand luggage when he attended the 208 Borneo challenge last year hahaha. weaspons HAnd luggage to declare sir - Yes FUel pump , turbo and injectors it cost me $200rm for him in excess baggage .
PIctures I will crawl under this morning and take pics and the fire extignuisher air tank all under the truck. I am now looking at having a bigger fire extinguisher to hold more air to try and drive some tools.

I Have watched WOng from Sabah in the RFC for 3 years smack and whack his coiled BJ43 15B-T running 22+PSI boost around the jungle he won 2 of the 3 years I watched so we got advice from them and my mekanik was dead keen to build it. Thats why my RED is "sabah'd" . Sabah tuning rocks those sabah boyz certainly can make diesels hum.
The hot 15B-T killed everything near it V8's the lot made them all look slow.
My next project is 14B-T the same config into YELLOW My only problem will be getting it past the 6 monthly inspections hahaha
Spare parts yup I have a spare 13B-T at the mekaniks just lying on the floor and spare axles and diffs. Soon I will collect another H55F gearbox as a spare and a spare XFER case. I Just need a spare 14B-T haha. HOwever parts are going up. 2 years ago you could not give away a PTO for $1500rm now you cannot buy one for less than $3000rm . My PTO/ELEC winch $3000 now you canot even look at less than $5000rm :( .
A LC II 6 months ago was around $21K now $30+K as people have finally realised they are not making them the same anymore and the 300% tax is killing any new ones coming in.
I bought the 1991 LC II 3L diesel for $18,000 cheap as a spare vehicle now value 5 months later at over $30K and all I have done is change the fluids!

JAckie Ho is the only one I can remember in a competative ZOOK running a VR4 mitsi engine . SOme of the Indon boyz run 3.0 diesels in the vitara ZOOKS. A ZOOK with a modified 8274 winch and TOYOTA LC II axles can be very good.

MY LJ77 Electric to Pneumatic LOcker COnversion
Simon asked for details on the REAR Electric factory locker to Pneumatic conversion so here is what I have.
haha its secret so its under cover.
NExt after a wash the pneumatic controller is revealed
Inside the black nylon casing is the air hose to the compressor tank.
Then a close up.
and another
then the compressor tank which is actually a 1kg fire extinguisher mounted under the right rear passenger where there is a bit of room.
Any more questions I am happy to answer on the conversion.
